The VMAs this year were a star-studded affair as the biggest names in the industry showed up with stellar performances. One of the most talked about performances of the night belonged to Sabrina Carpenter, who sang her smash hit ‘Taste‘ which fans have assumed is about Camila Cabello and Shawn Mendes – both of who were in attendance at the show.
Fans noticed a bunch of easter eggs that all the three stars have hinted while they attended the together. Here’s everything you need to know about the love triangle.
Shawn Mendes And Camila Cabello’s Dating History
Camila Cabello and Shawn Mendes were first linked in 2015 after they performed their song ‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’ together. Their 2019 single ‘Señorita‘ ignited more intense relationship speculations as they chanelled their chemistry in a seductive music video that had people talking. Later on, Shawn’s documentary on Netflix publicly addressed their relationship while also focusing on Cabello’s album ‘Romance‘
“For the past, like, four years, just being friends and not being able to see each other very often to finally being able to be together, she was always there to look out for me as a human being,” Mendes says in the documentary. “She’s got my back, and I think that’s what your partner is for.”
While they successfully dated till 2021, in November they released a joint statement announcing their breakup. It read, “Hey guys, we’ve decided to end our romantic relationship, but our love for one another as humans is stronger than ever,” they said. “We started our relationship as best friends and will continue to be best friends. We so appreciate your support from the beginning and moving forward.”

When Did Shawn Mendes Date Sabrina Carpenter?
The dating speculations started with rumours of them being spotted out and about in February 2023. Shortly after, paparazzi pictures of them walking around together in L.A. seemed to confirm the rumours. They were also spotted leaving Miley Cyrus’ album release party together in March.

In March, ET confirmed that they are in fact dating as they reported, “Shawn and Sabrina are seeing each other. They have been hanging out a lot and trying to keep things low-key. They were at a birthday party together a couple weeks ago and were cute together. Shawn is happy.”
In December, Sabrina posted a video of her singing an emotional rendition of ‘Cindy Lou Who’ which many fans assumed was written for Camila. In the video she was also seen wearing a sweater that seemingly belonged to Shawn.
Earlier this year she released her album ‘Short N Sweet’ where fans pointed out that a few songs definitely pointed towards them being for Shawn.

Sabrina released her much anticipated album ‘Short N Sweet’ and many fans interestingly dived deep into the song ‘Taste‘ where she talks about someone she has dated, who has gotten back together with his ex and Sabrina sings about how the ex will always taste her everytime she kisses the guy.
Sabrina chose Jenna Ortega to star in the video, and fans pointed out Sabrina’s choice of a brunette being the other woman in the song. Additionally, in a scene from the video where the boyfriend dies and there’s a funeral for him, fans noticed how the birth year of the deceased matched with Mendes’. In the song, Carpenter sings, “I heard you’re back together and if that’s true / You’ll just have to taste me when he’s kissin’ you”

Fans also noted how Cabello’s song ‘June Gloom’ sounds like it’s about Carpenter where she sings, “She’s cool, I heard / Won’t act surprised, I saw the pictures / We’re a house fire, for sure / Hope it’ll burn out but it just gets bigger / If she’s so amazing, why are you on this side of town? / If you like her so much, what are you here trying to find out?”
Shawn, Sabrina And Camila Attended The VMAs Together
All three of them attended the VMAs together this year and even performed on stage. While fans couldn’t stop talking about how Sabrina sang ‘Taste‘ in front of Shawn and Camila, many also pointed out that Camila’s outfit of the night looked awfully similar to what Jenna wore in the music video for ‘Taste‘

Additionally, Shawn posted two pictures of his outfit for the VMAs and wrote, “Pulling up to my own funeral” which fans saw as a reference to the funeral scene in Carpenter’s ‘Taste‘.

Anyway, Sabrina and Camila have already told their part of the story and now fans are expecting Mendes to drop some truth bombs about the love triangle. His album ‘Shawn‘ comes out this October and needless to say, we’d be listening.
