Fans were all ready to hear some truth bombs drop in Taylor Swift‘s ‘The Tortured Poets Department‘, and she revealed a great deal about what life was like after her breakup with Joe Alwyn. Swift revealed there was a steamy fling after Alwyn, possibly alluding to Matty Healy, whom she dated for a while after her breakup. Though the majority of the album is scattered with references to the fling, Joe Alwyn did get two songs on the album to herself, and Swift gave reasons as to why the breakup happened.
The first reason she mentions throughout many songs is that Alwyn refused to marry her. This is reflected in lyrics such as, “You swore that you loved me but where were the clues?
I died on the altar, waiting for the proof.“.
Next up, she gives details on Alwyn’s suffering from depression. A lot of lyrics allude to him being in a low place, which ended up affecting the relationship as a whole. One of the lyrics from ‘My Boy Only Breaks His Favorite Toys’ is “The voices in his head/ Called a ring to end our days of wild” indicating that his mental health was affecting the relationship.
Moreover, she also sings in ‘So Long, London’, “Pulled him in tighter each time he was drifting away/ My spine split from carrying us up the hill.” She also adds in the song, “Oh the tragedy/ So long London./ You’ll find someone.“
Nevertheless, there’s certainly less space for Joe in an album that Swift seemed to be teasing was entirely about Joe. At least it saves him from all the online hate.
Taylor Swift’s ‘The Tortured Poets Department’
Taylor Swift’s highly anticipated album just dropped today and it bears less resemblance to what fans had in mind. Many expected the album to be more on the ‘Folklore‘-‘Evermore‘ side, but the album bears more resemblance to ‘Midnights‘. Secondly, there’s not as much Joe Alwyn content on the album as everyone expected. It has, however, made a lot of allusions to her short romance with Matty Healy.
A music video for ‘Fortnight‘ featuring Post Malone is also set to release shortly after, making it Swift’s first music video after a long break. The last music video she released was ‘I Can See You’ from ‘Speak Now’.
Reviews are still awaited on the album, though it leaked a day before. Many are speculating if it will be a worthy contender for next year’s Grammys.
