Dua Lipa On Her Humiliating Dance Performance
A video of Dua Lipa dancing to performing to her song at her 2017 concert went viral and turned into a meme. Fans called her motions a “pencil sharpener“. Celebrities face social media trolling and humiliation daily. The singer later realized the impact those memes had on her.
While talking with The Guardian, the singer said, “When people took that snippet of me dancing online and just turned it into a meme, and then when I won the best new artist Grammy and people were like, ‘She’s not deserving of it, she’s got no stage presence, she’s not going to stick around.’ Those things were hurtful. It was humiliating. I had to take myself off Twitter”.
Dua still faces trolling for her dance but she has embraced and developed into a brilliant performer now. She has a great stage presence and didn’t let the trolls affect her and her career. Moreover, people didn’t realize that she was growing as a performer and a person both at the same time.
She was in her early 20s during that time. She was figuring out a lot of things while being a 22- 23 year old. ‘Don’t Start Now‘ singer continued, “The thing that made me the happiest – performing and writing songs – was also making me really upset because people were picking everything apart that I’d been working on, and I had to learn all that in front of everyone.”

The Trolls Continued For 2 Years
Dua Lipa continued that her trolls on social media lasted for almost two years. She wasn’t much affected by what others thought of her but as she had to encounter it daily, she was a bit taken aback. She said, “It never was like I couldn’t get out of bed because of what I thought people thought of me. I didn’t care to that degree. But that’s when it was most heightened for me.”
The singer finished writing her 2020 album ‘Future Nostalgia’ and completed her first performance of ‘Don’t Start Now’ at the MTV Europe Music Awards.
Comparing her confidence to her 2017 performance, Dua has changed a lot. She proved all the haters wrong. “It was November 2019 when ‘Don’t Start Now’ came out, and it dawned on me that I’m finally going to get up and dance in front of people after what they have thought about me for so long,” she added.
Lipa was successful in coming back and rising above all the trolls. She continued, “And I went back, did that performance, and everyone was like, ‘Oh, we were wrong.’ I got a real kick out of that.”
