Zack Snyder, after the fallout with DC, joined forces with Netflix to make a magnum opus project, an ode to the ‘Star Wars’ series. The upcoming two-part film project, ‘Rebel Moon’, has been one of the most ambitious projects by the director. As the first part, ‘Rebel Moon: A Child of Fire’, will be out soon on Netflix, the early reviews are out.
‘Rebel Moon’ follows the interplanetary adventure of Kora, played by Sofia Boutella, to save the peaceful colony of Veldt. She is given the task of creating a force to prevent Regent Belisarius from colonizing the planets. While doing so, there is another task of keeping the force intact for one goal. While there was a lot of hope for the new sci-fi project, the early reviews have slammed Zack’s new directorial venture.

Zack Snyder’s ‘Rebel Moon’ Receives Criticism For Lack Of Originality
The first part of Zack Snyder’s galactic sci-fi film has been released in theaters for a limited theatrical run. ‘Rebel Moon’ will be released on Netflix on December 21, 2023. After the theatrical release, reviews from major publications have poured in, and the critics have been brutal towards Zack for a ‘Star Wars’ rip-off.
Zack Snyder has been working to mount the world of ‘Rebel Moon’ since 2012, when he wanted to merge it into the ‘Star Wars’ franchise. However, after Disney acquired Lucas Films in 2012, the project came to a standstill. Later, Deborah Snyder’s Stone Quarry and Netflix collaborated to make the project.
As per the reviews, it is evident that Zack has taken inspiration from ‘Star Wars’, but some reviews hint at a blatant copy of the celebrated franchise. In The Guardian, Charles Bramesco gave the film one star, saying, “The director’s attempt to replicate Star Wars for smartphones is an ugly, unforgivably dull and self-serious mess.”
‘Rebel Moon’ has a stellar cast with the likes of E. Duffy, Ray Fisher, Michiel Huisman, Sofia Boutella, and others. However, the characters that he has sketched out falter over substance while going overboard with style.
Simon Abrams on Roger Ebert writes, “As usual, Snyder doesn’t seem to care about these characters so much as he likes their style-guide features, like their cleavage, their haircuts, and their hard-stressed accents.”

Zack Addresses If The Film Has Hints Of ‘Star Wars’
While it was intended to be a part of the ‘Star Wars’ franchise, Zack Snyder’s ‘Rebel Moon’ resulted in an original film without any baggage of a famous franchise. However, the reviews tell a different story. During an interview with Collider, Zack Snyder talked about whether there are any hints or inspirations from the franchise.
Zack Snyder said, “I would say that it ends up being nearly 100% different than what I had intended. I mean, other than the basic concept of farmers – the bad guys come, they want the farmers’ food, the farmers say no, they’re going to come back, build an army, fight.” He said that there are iconography inspirations taken from ‘Star Wars’.
