When it comes to ‘Bridgerton‘, Lady Danbury is one of the most powerful characters in the series. Adjoa Andoh, who plays Lady Danbury is no less in real life. Like her character, Andoh is also powerful, regal, and just plain fierce.
However, in real life, she does not feel powerful all the time. As a Black person, the 61-year-old actress has faced many controversies in her acting career. And so, Andoh has opened up about it in a recent interview.
Adjoa Andoh Opens Up About Black Skin Lightening

“The continuing conversation about lighting Black skin,” Andoh said on the podcast. “On every show, nothing’s changed.” Andoh conceded that she feels powerful “in that I will now go: ‘Am I blond?,’” adding, “But I hate doing it because a bit of me is like, ‘Oh I don’t want to do it. Adjoa Andoh Opens Up About Doubting Herself
Although she plays a strong and independent woman on screen, in real life Adjoa Andoh has often felt self-doubt. So she leaves no stones unturned when it comes to standing up for herself. Andoh feels that if she does not stand up for herself, her quality of work will be affected.
“I want to stay in character,” Andoh said. “I just want to come on and be Lady Danbury and do what she’s got to do and be totally engaged with that.” She continued, “When people say we’re chippy or we’re being militant or we’re all that stuff, what I want to say is, ‘I’m just a human being and I just want to do the gift that I’m blessed with. I want to do it in a free way, like I see many other people doing.’”’
Lady Danbury from ‘Bridgerton‘ still feels self-doubt. This is because she questions whether she got the job because of her race or her capabilities. How does she deal with it? Andoh revealed, “I don’t want to think about it. I just want to get the job because I’m great, or not get the job because I’m s—.”
