“Rebel Moon Is A Love Letter To…”: Zack Snyder Lists Films That Inspired His Netflix Sci-Fi Film

Zack Snyder’s magnum opus, ‘Rebel Moon’, was released in limited theaters. The director has been mounting the world of this interplanetary sci-fi film since 2012. The story revolves around Kora, played by Sofia Boutella, who is assigned the task of creating a force to defeat the antagonist, Regent Belisarius.

Zack Snyder never shied away from saying that there have been many inspirations from the ‘Star Wars’ franchise in the film, as ‘Rebel Moon’ was planned to be a part of the franchise. However, after Lucas Films came under Disney, the plan was dropped. Now, the film will be released on Netflix, and the director has revealed other inspirations that shaped the film.

The DCEU fans are certainly aware of the Snyderverse, but after the fallout with the studios due to creative differences after the director’s cut of ‘Justice League’, Zack went on to create an original world with ‘Rebel Moon’. The director is all set to extend the cinematic world of the film into creating video games, podcasts, and dabbling in other ventures.

During an interview with Hindustan Times, Zack Snyder talked about the films that inspired him to take on the mammoth task of creating the ‘Rebel Moon’. Snyder listed films like David Lynch’s controversial ‘Blue Velvet’, Irish Kershner’s ‘The Empire Strikes Back’, ‘Blade Runner’, and others.

Zack Snyder said, “When you distil it down, those were really the movies that influenced me between 1977 and 1987, when I was basically 11 years old until I was a sophomore in college. These were the movies that changed me, in fact changed all of us at that time.”

Snyder continued, “They shaped your aesthetic, what you like and don’t like. There were some iconic movies that just hit me in that window.”

Zack Snyder went on to appreciate the films that were mentioned due to their originality. In the interview, Snyder added, “Blue Velvet is a kind of the end of innocence for us. That’s why Rebel Moon is a love letter to these fantasies, sci-fi blockbusters that they were making without abandon. Those were new, original things.”

He continued, “You didn’t know they’d be coming. Aliens was just that. Where you just go and get your mind blown.”

While these films helped Zack Snyder get inspired to create the world of ‘Rebel Moon’, the ‘Star Wars’ franchise is the one that he was inspired by.

In an interview with Collider, he was asked whether he has taken any inspiration from the celebrated franchise. Zack said, “I would say that it ends up being nearly 100% different than what I had intended. I mean, other than the basic concept of farmers – the bad guys come, they want the farmers’ food; the farmers say no, they’re going to come back, build an army, fight.”

He said that the iconography inspirations were taken from ‘Star Wars’. Snyder wants his Netflix film to be what the Intergalactic franchise was for the previous generation.
