‘You‘ has become one of Netflix’s most talked-about shows thanks to its thrilling plot, complex characters, and shocking twists. Among its many surprises, the death of Love Quinn, Joe’s wife and the mother of his child, in season three, stands out as one of the most unexpected and gruesome. Adding to the shock factor, Joe also cuts off his own toes in the aftermath of the murder.
The show has become a cultural phenomenon for its exploration of the psyche of a serial killer and the intricate web of relationships that he creates. In its third season, the show takes a bold step forward by having Joe Goldberg (Penn Badgley) commit the murder of his wife, Love Quinn, whom he had been obsessing over for several episodes. Fans of the show were left wondering what could have driven Joe to commit such horrific acts against the woman he once loved.

Love’s Betrayal In ‘You’: The Ultimate Trigger For Joe Goldberg
Throughout the third season of ‘You‘, it becomes increasingly clear that Joe’s relationship with Love (Victoria Pedretti) is not the idyllic love story that it appears to be on the surface. Love is revealed to be as disturbed and dangerous as Joe, and her actions threaten to expose Joe’s own dark secrets. When Love reveals to Joe that she killed their neighbor and Joe’s ex-girlfriend Candace, it becomes the ultimate betrayal for Joe, who had been convinced that he was the only one who could protect his loved ones.
Joe kills Love in the final moments of the season’s last episode because he discovers that she is just as much of a killer as he is. Love had previously confessed to killing Delilah and Candace, two people who had gotten in the way of her relationship with Joe. In the end, Joe realizes that he cannot be with someone who is just as twisted and dangerous as he is, and he kills her in an attempt to protect their son and start a new life with Marienne.

The Significance Of The Self-Mutilation
After killing Love with a lethal injection of Wolfsbane, Joe stages her death to look like a suicide. He cuts off two of his own toes and places one in a pie and the other in Love’s kill box. To further conceal his role in the murders, Joe writes an email from Love’s account confessing to the killings of Ryan, Natalie, Gil, and even her own husband. He then cuts off two of his own toes to make it appear as though he has died as well. Joe purposefully leaves behind his DNA in hopes of making it seem like Love killed him as she did with the other victims in Madre Linda. He plans to secretly go to Paris to search for Marienne without anyone searching for him.
While the bizarre act of cutting off his own toes may seem like a random and grotesque detail, it holds significant symbolic meaning for Joe’s character arc. For Joe, cutting off his toes could be seen as a form of punishment for himself or a way of expelling the guilt and shame he feels over Love’s murder. Furthermore, the loss of his toes could be interpreted as a metaphor for Joe’s gradual loss of control over his life and the consequences of his actions catching up to him. As the show progresses, we see Joe struggling to come to terms with the gravity of what he has done and the possibility that he may never be able to escape his past.
