Kate McKinnon joined Saturday Night Live in 2012 and has since enjoyed a massive fan following for her celebrity impressions like Justin Bieber, Hilary Clinton, Ellen DeGeneres, etc. She left the series in May this year, becoming the show’s longest-tenured female cast member. Pete Davidson, Aidy Bryant, and Kyle Mooney also left the show at the end of season 47.

The 38-year-old actress opened up about why she left the comedy show. She talked to Ryan Seacrest and Kelly Ripa about her decision on Live With Kelly and Ryan.

She said, “I thought about it for a very long time, and it was very, very hard.” The comedian then added, “All I ever wanted to do in my whole life was be on Saturday Night Live, so I did, I loved it, I had the best decade, and then I was just like, my body was tired, and I felt like it was time.”

When asked whether she will be watching SNL this coming season, McKinnon expressed doubt, “I don’t know what I will do. I don’t know if I can watch the show yet. It’s just too emo because I miss everyone so much. I mean, it’s my family for sure – my other family. I think I’m just going to tape The Bachelorette and watch that instead.”

McKinnon started her farewell speech at the start of the show with another edition of her long-running Close Encounters sketch. It concluded with her saying, “Earth, I love you. Thanks for letting me stay a while.”

The actress received several awards and nominations for her work at SNL. She has been nominated for seven Primetime Emmy Awards, including one for Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics and six for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series ( she won in 2016 and 2017).

In 2016, she became the first actor from SNL to win the award since Dana Carvey in 1993. Kate leaving the show is surely a setback, both for SNL and its viewers.
