‘Orange Is The New Black’ was one of the successful running shows from the year 2013 to 2019. After almost seven years, the show filled with prison uniforms and heartfelt moments came to an end. It gave the viewers an insight into the experiences and hardships of trans, black, and Latina women in the outside world that can push them to cross boundaries and land them behind bars.
As the show represented the corruption and discrimination faced in the prison system, Kate Mulgrew, who played the role of a powerful figure, Red, in the prison and ran her own gang in the series, wasn’t happy with the fate of her character.

Kate Mulgrew Is Not Happy With The Ending Of Her Character Red
From the beginning of the ‘Orange Is The New Black‘ Kate Mulgrew played – Red an important role in the series. By the end of the show, Red suffered from dementia, which increased after spending time in the Security Housing Unit. Kate was present at Fan Expo Boston where she expressed that she didn’t like the fate of her character Red.
She said clearly, “I dislike it. And I told Jenji I didn’t like it. No, I didn’t like it, Jenji knew that my mother died that way. I didn’t see it in Red. I have to be honest with you, I didn’t see it in her strength, her mettle, her courage, her sharpness, her acuity, her heart, her sensitivity, her strategic sense, I didn’t see it in her culinary gift”.
Kate Mulgrew thought that her character’s end was hurried a bit. She added, “So, I thought it was a little hurried … If you’re gonna go that way, then let me have a minute with the audience to play it, you know what I mean? I felt a little…disappointed, I suppose, but that’s fair, it’s alright.”

Mulgrew On Her Diminished Screen-Time In Later Seasons Of ‘Orange Is The New Black’
Kate Mulgrew is proud of her role in the series. She said, “I had three great seasons and, as you know, it was a game changer“. Kate continued, “Was I sad about not having lots to do in 4 and 5? Of course, because we are full of ego. We’re truly full of ego. I’d love to die without it. That’s my goal in life.”
Mulgrew also talked about how suddenly Red’s presence was ‘completely yet naturally’ diminished after the first three seasons. She said this came to be after adding more and more series regulars with each new season. Bute Kate was happy to play such a big role at the start of the show.
