After months of uncertainty following the cancellation of ‘The Movie Critic’, Quentin Tarantino‘s next directorial effort finally appears to be gaining momentum. The renowned director has not revealed his plans for his tenth and likely last film himself. However, a new production update indicates that the project is slowly coming together behind the scenes.

The news is courtesy of longtime collaborator Robert Richardson, who recently announced that Tarantino is planning to get into pre-production sometime in the summer of 2027, with cameras rolling later in the year.

“He’s not going to talk about where he’s going with his next film; it’s some time next year. The exact time isn’t locked. It could be prepped in the summer, it depends on how the play does and where it goes,” he told Screendaily.

Plot specifics are still tightly guarded, but Richardson said that the director has discovered “something new” to pursue. “The next film will be a very fresh Quentin. He’s going to get out of The Movie Critic and the sequel to Once Upon A Time In Hollywood. This next chapter will be something fresh.”

This could be a promising sign after he abandoned his previous script. ‘The Movie Critic’ seemed like Tarantino’s goodbye to filmmaking. Brad Pitt was rumored to be attached to the project, and pre-production had already started when the director suddenly dropped it.

Later, Tarantino said that he felt that the story had too much DNA with ‘Once Upon a Time in Hollywood’. Instead of having to make a film he didn’t believe in, he decided to begin anew. It’s a choice he’s made throughout his career, and with his next film being his tenth and last, he’s always been very selective.

Tarantino is now working on finishing his stage play, The Popinjay Cavalier, before he can get back to making movies, according to Richardson. “He is in that phase of working on a play”. The show is set to open in the West End of London in early 2027.

The mystery of Tarantino’s next movie hasn’t been solved yet, but the latest development is exciting. Richardson’s remarks indicate that something is being done. However, it’s also clear that the director may not be in a rush to get things finished.

After his last film, Tarantino has been busy. He recently released ‘Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair’ after years of waiting and is currently the writer of ‘The Adventures of Cliff Booth’, directed by David Fincher and starring Brad Pitt.

However, his own comeback as a director is the one that’s most eagerly awaited. Tarantino has been claiming for years that he plans to retire after ten feature films. So, each announcement of that last project is an important one.

Exactly what story he plans to tell remains a closely guarded secret. However, with production now said to be slated for 2027, the clock may have started for one of Hollywood’s most anticipated films. Fans will undoubtedly be watching closely as more details emerge about the movie that could bring one of modern cinema’s most celebrated directing careers to a close.
