Shakira May Face 8 Years In Prison And $24 Million Fine For Tax Fraud

The Spanish Tax Agency has accused the ‘Hips Don’t Lie‘ pop singer Shakira of tax fraud. The Columbian singer is tied in an unpaid taxes case for the years 2012 to 2014. Following the charges, the prosecutor’s office offered a deal to close the case. However, the singer rejected the settlement offer.

Now, one of the Spanish prosecutors is asking her to serve eight years and two months in the prison, along with a fine of more than $23.51 million. Shakira’s main argument, in this case, is that she didn’t live in Spain for the years 2012 to 2014, and therefore, she is not liable for any tax fines.

According to the tax agency, Shakira didn’t pay taxes up to €14.5m ($14.7 million). The Reuters got hold of the prosecutor’s documents, which highlighted that Shakira was indeed a resident of Spain for the years 2012 to 2014. In May 2012, she bought a home in Barcelona. Later in 2013, Shakira was living in the house with her partner and their son. The prosecutor has stated that she will serve eight years in prison if they should find her guilty.

Shakira’s representative has commented that the 45-year-old is “fully confident of her innocence” and that she considers the case “a total violation of her rights”. They also added that her main residence was in the Bahamas.
