“They’re Hired Hands”: Quentin Tarantino Slams Marvel Directors

Quentin Tarantino is someone known to call a spade a spade. One of the most influential filmmakers of all time, Tarantino has directed films like ‘Reservoir Dogs‘, ‘Pulp Fiction‘ and ‘Kill Bill‘ among others. Just like many, he detests the way Marvel Studio functions in Hollywood.

The 59-year-old director recently took a dig at the MCU directors and called them “hired hands.” He also went on to say that he is not interested in doing such films as he is not looking for a job. Let’s find out in detail about Tarantino’s comments on Marvel films.

Tarantino has been vocal about a lot of things in the Hollywood industry, including the importance of shooting films instead of digital. He has now taken a dig at Marvel directors.

In an interview with Los Angeles Times for his new book Cinema Speculation, the ‘Django Unchained‘ director said he will never make a Marvel film. “You have to be a hired hand to do those things,” he said.

He continued, “I’m not a hired hand. I’m not looking for a job.” In his book, Tarantino wrote that filmmakers today “can’t wait for the day” superhero genre fall out of favor. He said that such comments are “snarky little asides out of the corner of my mouth.”

The director then said that he likes big-budget films but not the Marvel ones. “Of course, I liked ‘Star Wars.’ What’s not to like?”, he said. “But I remember — and this is not a ‘but’ in a negative way, but in a good way.

Tarantino continued to talk about the space opera. “The movie completely carried me along and I was just rocking and rolling with these characters….When the lights came on, I felt like a million dollars.”

And I looked around and had this moment of recognition, thinking, ‘Wow! What a time at the movies!’”, he added. “Now, that’s not necessarily my favorite exact type of film.”

He then revealed that he is more of a fan of Speilberg’s kind of cinema. “At the end of the day, I’m more of a ‘Close Encounters [of the Third Kind]’ guy, just the bigger idea and Spielberg setting out to make an epic for regular people, not just cinephiles. Few films had the kind of climax that ‘Close Encounters’ had. It blew audiences away.”

Earlier, James Cameron had criticized characters in Marvel films, stating that it felt like they were still “in college.”
