A director par excellence, Steven Spielberg proved to be one of the most important filmmakers of our times. He has given many theatrically opulent and emotionally charged films that changed the grammar of filmmaking. The movies like ‘E.T. the Extra Terrestrial’, ‘Schindler’s List’, ‘The Terminal’, and more have become classics and won several accolades.
The Academy Award-winning filmmaker has infused his personal stories into his magical, intense, and emotionally driven films. Under the garb of cinema, he told us stories that were connected to his life. But, now with ‘The Fablemans’, Spielberg has bared it all. But, was his “origin story” the film that he always wanted to make?

The director always wanted to make films since he could remember. Spielberg’s childhood passion became his profession, but he still made the films with the fervor and passion he had when he was a kid. The storyteller always brought his family stories to celluloid with his films, but it was told via aliens, knights, and soldiers.
The upcoming film ‘The Fablemans’ chronicles the childhood story of Steven Spielberg and the tumultuous separation of his parents. The film stars Michelle Williams, the ‘Little Miss Sunshine’ fame Paul Dano, and Gabriel LaBelle. In an interview, ‘The Terminal’ director deemed this film to be the one film he always wanted to make.
He said, “I started seriously thinking, if I had to make one movie I haven’t made yet, something that I really want to do on a very personally atomic level, what would that be? And there was only one story I really wanted to tell.”

The Director’s Parents Insisted Him To Make A Film About His Family
Like every son, Steven Spielberg had a turbulent relationship with his father Arnold. But, when he became older he reconciled with his father and they started living in the same vicinity. The pandemic brought the father and son closer as Arnold’s health started to deteriorate until he died in August 2020 at the age of 103. In 2017, he lost his mother Leah in February.
For Steven, coming to terms with his parent’s divorce was a journey of empathy. He said, “My life with my mom and dad taught me a lesson, which I hope this film in a small way imparts. Which is, when does a young person in a family start to see his parents as human beings?”
He continued, “In my case, because of what happened between the ages of 7 and 18, I started to appreciate my mom and dad not as parents but as real people.” However, it was Arnold and Leah who sowed the seeds for ‘The Fablemans’ before their death.
Spielberg revealed, “They were actually nagging me, ‘When are you going to tell that story about our family, Steve?’ And so this was something they were very enthusiastic about.”
‘The Fablemans’ will be released on November 11th, 2022.
