Which Anime Series Inspired Michael B. Jordan’s Directorial Debut ‘Creed III’?

Being in a director’s chair is not easy. It’s a sense of responsibility to present your vision to the audience and take on the heavy lifting of the journey at your shoulders. Michael B. Jordan stepped into the director’s chair for the first time on his return as Adonis Creed for ‘Creed III‘. At a press release, the actor admitted that his journey is inspired by a popular shonen anime of all time.

Michael B. Jordan’s love for anime is not a new affair. He has never shied away from professing his love for the anime industry. Well, this is evident even more as he claimed that his directorial debut has been widely inspired by several anime, like ‘One Piece‘ and ‘Dragon Ball‘, however, one anime that inspired his creative vision that led to the execution of ‘Cred III’ the most was ‘Naruto‘.

Naruto‘ is an anime adaptation of the best-selling manga of all time. It takes us on the journey of the notorious Naruto Uzumaki, of the hidden leaf village, who dreams and believes to become a Hokage, the leader of the village. He was a kid who was ostracized by the entire village, and in hunger to be acknowledged, he follows a soulful and adventurous journey to become the strongest shinobi of all time and to be acknowledged and respected by all.

An example of a modern-day prototype shonen anime, ‘Naruto’ narrates the story of a young hero and his pals along the way of achieving their destined goals, as well as loads of action, intense storyline, and humor. It gently touches on themes of friendship, arduous labor, perseverance, and self-belief magically. It is a story that inspires anyone and everyone and is a favorite among many Otaku.

Jordan has previously been expressive about his fondness towards ‘Naruto’ and “Outlier Society Productions”. The character of Sasuke, the second-in-line protagonist in ‘Naruto’, often considered himself a “lone survivor” of the Uchihas, the strongest of all clans, after his brother, Uchiha Itachi, one night put the entire clan to sleep.

This inspired him to name his production house “Outlier Society Productions” which simply translates to the phrase “the lone one out of a group or category.” In his earlier ventures as well, the actor has improvised the references from ‘Naruto’, one such example is, the use of “Rasengan” employed by his character Killmonger in ‘Black Panther‘.

Jordan surrenders to his belief that the message of ‘Naruto’ and his idea for ‘Creed III‘, in which Adonis Creed will face fresh obstacles both within and outside the ring, are alike. As he negotiates his relationship with his father’s heritage and his destiny as a boxer, Adonis struggles with questions of identity and purpose, which is very much like the journey of Nastuto as he always seeks validation and to be acknowledged by his village.

Jordan’s usage of ‘Naruto’ as inspiration for ‘Creed III’ demonstrates the influence and inspiration that anime can have on people from all walks of life and professions. Since the pandemic ravaged the world in 2020, anime has had a significant influence on popular culture, and it is fascinating to observe how it continues to affect the creative visions of artists in other sectors.
