Ninja ranks just as the name suggests are rankings given to Shinobi. Each village has a different ranking system and different ways for the Shinobi to advance through the ranks. For Konoha, the ninja ranks are Genin, Chunin, Jonin, and then Arunin, in ascending order.

A shinobi’s rank is quite crucial for them. It not only shows their strength but also shows their experience level. These ranks are important for any village as it helps the Kage or the village leader to assign missions according to the shinobi’s rank.

The ranks are also important as the opponents or enemies sometimes choose not to fight Shinobi that are of lower rank to them out of respect and morals. This however can end up being counterproductive for the Shinobi as they may sometimes have to fight opponents superior in rank to them. Naruto is the only Kage who is still a Genin despite being a Hokage.

What Are The Differences Between Them?

The lowest rank of Shinobi is the academy level students. They aren’t even considered Shinobi since they are still learning. The next level and the most basic level of Shinobi is Genin. They are the youngest and they haven’t been given any exams solely for advancing through the ninja ranks. These Shinobi are always accompanied by a Jonin-level Shinobi for any mission.

The next level is chunin. Chunins are those Shinobi who have given an exam for advancing. They are given D and C-rank missions, and those who perform well, sometimes are given B-rank missions. It is quite rare for them to get higher-rank missions, and they are accompanied by a Jonin should they get a high-rank mission.

Jonin are always the team leader for any Shinobi team. They are very high-level Shinobi and are quite advanced in terms of their jutsu. Jonins get the A-rank missions and S-rank missions which are the most difficult of them all. Anbu recruits Jonins to be a part of their ranks.

Arunin is a special rank and doesn’t officially exist. This rank is in between the Jonin level Shinobi and the Kage level Shinobi. It was first introduced by Tsunaku Senju. These Shinobi are stronger than the jonins but are weaker than the Kage of their respective villages. These are the major differences between these ranks.
