The Most Expensive Jewel In Queen Elizabeth II’s Personal Collection

The Nizam of Hyderabad necklace worn by Queen Elizabeth II and Kate Middleton

The Nizam of Hyderabad necklace which is worth $66 million is arguably the most expensive piece in the British monarch’s collection of jewels. It was given to her as a wedding present by the Nizam of Hyderabad Asaf Jah VII in the year 1947. At the time, the Nizam was the world’s richest man and he could certainly afford to gift the Queen who was then a Princess this truly captivating present. According to records, the Nizam instructed the firm Cartier in London to let Princess Elizabeth choose any piece she liked from the existing collection. She went on to choose this stunning platinum piece which consists of approximately 300 jewels.

The queen has worn it on several occasions like her first ever trip to Washington in October 1951 where she met President Harry Truman. She also donned it when she posed for official portraits that were used on currency bills like the Bahamas Dollar. The necklace was also worn by the Duchess of Cambridge Kate Middleton on at least two occasions – once in 2014 when she wore it at the National Portrait Gallery and then again in 2019 at the Diplomatic Corps reception.

    The Queen’s Favorite Diamond Piece

    Granny’s Chips brooch

Granny’s Chips is a diamond brooch owned by the Queen of England which is much more expensive than its name suggests. It was made from two diamonds cut from the infamous Cullinan diamond discovered in South Africa in 1905 and named after the mine’s chairman Thomas Cullinan. It was first gifted to King Edward VII in 1907 and later passed on to Queen Elizabeth by her grandmother Queen Mary when she was about to be crowned queen. For a young Elizabeth, the diamond piece wasn’t just another piece of jewelry instead it is a token of a grandmother’s love and holds a sentimental value for the Queen. Perhaps, for this reason, the piece is the Queen’s favorite.

There are other stunning pieces that the Queen adores and they all mean something special to her. These include the Queen Mary’s Lover’s Knot Brooch which was made in the late 19th century and acquired by Queen Mary in 1932 and bequeathed to Elizabeth. She also adores the three-pearl strand necklace given to her by her father King George VI on her wedding day in 1947. And last but not the least, her engagement ring given to her by the late Prince Philip which was made by his late mother Princess Alice.
