Selena Gomez and Justin Bieber first linked up in 2012. Their on-and-off relationship spanned till 2020, almost eight years. At one point, the fans had assumed that the couple is an endgame thing, that they’d eventually get together. However, following the couple’s 2020 breakup, the prospect of the two ever getting back together was completely out of question, since Justin married Hailey Baldwin (now Hailey Bieber).
In her recent documentary, ‘My Mind And Me‘, Selena has given her fans a glimpse of the past six years of her inner life. The ‘Lose You To Love Me‘ singer opened up about how she felt about her past relationship and the blow of the final split with Justin.

Selena Gomez Reflects On How Her Breakup Shaped Up Who She Is
The song ‘Lose You To Love Me‘ was released in October 2019. While releasing the song, Selena had also released an official statement. She said, “This song was inspired by many things that have happened in my life since releasing my last album. I thought it was important to share the music, as I know many can relate to the fact that the road to self-discovery generally comes through the scars in one’s life. I want people to feel hope and to know you will come out the other side stronger and a better version of yourself.”
In her documentary, Selena talks about the confessional track and all the feelings that went behind it, part of which was also related to her highly publicized relationship with Bieber.
“I text Julia Michaels and Justin Tranter and said, ‘I think I’m ready to just say I’m sad. We wrote the song in 45 minutes. The fastest song I’ve ever written,” Gomez reveals in her documentary. She continued, “It’s about more than a lost love. It’s me learning to choose myself, to choose life, but also hoping that people can find grace and peace in that too. The song is about knowing that you completely lost every part of who you are just to rediscover yourself again.”
In short, her relationship with the ‘Baby‘ singer taught her a lot about her own self, and today, she can look at her past with much more confidence, since they sowed the seeds for her growth.
“Everything was so public. I felt haunted by a past relationship that no one wanted to let go of. Then I just moved past it, and I wasn’t afraid anymore,” Gomez found the end of the tunnel after staying in the dark for so long. She also added, “I feel like I had to go through the worst possible heartbreak ever and then just forgetting everything at the drop of the hand, it was really confusing,” she reflected. “But I just think that needed to happen and ultimately it was the best thing that ever happened to me.”

Selena Wanted Her Record Label To See Her Outside Of Her Relationship With Bieber
In the documentary, Selena also recollects one of the incidents during her Revival tour in 2016. Selena broke down in tears during the rehearsals because of being constantly connected with Bieber. The head of her record label, John Janick, wanted her to do a song with him.
Through the tears, Selena says, “I don’t know what John thinks, I want to talk to John. I don’t want to disappoint John. I don’t want him to think that he signed some f**king Disney kid. It just sucks too, because the whole song thing. He called me this morning about the song with Justin, like, when am I just going to be good enough by myself? When am I gonna be good just by myself, not needed anybody to be associated with?”
