Winona Ryder Was Once Cast In A Film Due To Controversy But Was Fired For The Same

Winona Ryder is not a new name being associated with controversies. Initially playing only quirky roles, the actress grew to prominence for her diverse performances. Recently she starred as Joyce Byers in the Netflix science fiction horror series ‘Stranger Things’, for which she received a Golden Globe nomination as well.

The actress’s relationship with Johnny Depp which lasted from 1989 to 1993 and the 2001 arrest for shoplifting became targets of tabloid news. This controversy, however, once allegedly got her a role in a little-known movie. But she was later quickly fired because she allegedly kept robbing the set.

Ryder was later found guilty and had to serve three years of supervised probation. In addition, she also did 480 hours of community service and had to pay a $2700 fine.

In 2003, Vincent Gallo directed a small independent film, ‘The Brown Bunny’ which revolved around a professional racer meeting several women while traveling from New Hampshire to California to race. The film was already surrounded by controversies, and Gallo thought it would be the right decision to cast Winona who herself was knee-deep in her controversy.

However, Vincent Gallo fired the ‘Stranger Things’ star because of her unacceptable behavior on the sets. During an interview with SF Gate, Gallo revealed the reason for firing Wiona saying that “she was not in great shape at the time. And she was robbing everything in sight.” He also added, “I knew she was going to jail and this will be good for the movie. I would never cast Winona Ryder in a significant role.”

Ryder starred in the cult-classic 1989 film ‘Heathers’. Although it is greatly appreciated today, back then the movie was criticized for its wrong way. Despite being a talented actress in 2013 said, “I was fired once from a movie because I did Heathers. I was cast in a movie and the director saw an advance screening and was offended by it and fired me. It wasn’t until years later that [the film] became more appreciated.”
