Doing a guest spot on ‘Friends’ was crucial for Winona Ryder. Despite having a string of hits in the 90s, her film appearances during the early 2000s were few and few between. She had no acting roles except her cameo in Ben Stiller’s Zoolander.’ ‘Friends’ was her way to get back in the cultural zeitgeist.

Unfortunately, her brief time on the show angered the LGBTQ+ community. Her kiss with Jennifer Aniston was seen as a cheap stunt to bump the ratings. It was humiliating, as Winona’s character was seen as a throwaway gag in a heterosexual character’s attempt to prove a point. Years later, she has again come to public notice with the Netflix series ‘Stranger Things’.
