As Donald Trump readies up to take the Presidential hot seat, Joe Biden is finishing the last of his duties as America’s leader and has just pardoned his son Hunter Biden who was convicted of crimes related to guns and taxation.
As usual, President-elect Donald Trump stood up to comment on it, calling it a “miscarriage of justice” and slamming Biden for misusing his power. Here’s the full story.
Why Did Joe Biden Pardon Hunter Biden?
In a reversal of his earlier statements that he would not use his presidential authority to pardon him, Joe Biden pardoned his son Hunter Biden on Sunday night. Hunter Biden’s sentencing for his conviction on federal gun crimes was set for December 12. In a different criminal matter, he entered a guilty plea to federal tax evasion charges in September and was scheduled to be sentenced on December 16.
“I believe in the justice system, but as I have wrestled with this, I also believe raw politics has infected this process and it led to a miscarriage of justice — and once I made this decision this weekend, there was no sense in delaying it further. I hope Americans will understand why a father and a President would come to this decision,” Biden said in his statement.
According to a White House statement, the president granted Hunter Biden a “full and unconditional pardon” for any crimes he “committed or may have committed or participated in during the period from January 1, 2014 through December 1, 2024.”
Donald Trump Reacts To Joe Biden Pardoning His Son
Trump is criticizing Biden’s decision to pardon his son as the President elect to call out the outgoing President for misusing his powers.
“Does the Pardon given by Joe to Hunter include the J-6 Hostages, who have now been imprisoned for years?” Trump asked in a post on Truth Social, adding, “Such an abuse and miscarriage of Justice!”
Those detained for their roles in the Capitol Hill riots on January 6, 2021, are referred to as “J6 hostages.” These people have been called hostages by Trump and his followers, who claim they were participating in the event in a peaceful and patriotic manner.
