An upside-down American flag, for the value that it holds in political terms, is considered a strong symbolism in the States. Though it initially was a symbol of dire distress and extreme danger to life and property in the country as per the US Flag Code, its meaning seems to have evolved over time.
Several activists now symbolize an upside-down American flag as a means to protest against issues that workers associated with various sociopolitical matters may face. The belief first came into being after the Supreme Court’s controversial decision to overturn the Roe v. Wade abortion case. It then went on to find meaning in several other protests against the US top brass.

What Does An Inverted American Flag Symbolize?
The meaning gained more prominence in August 2022, when many protestors started using this inverted emblem amid the uproar surrounding the FBI’s search of former President Donald Trump‘s Mar-a-Lago residence. It was even more conspicuous among Trump’s rivals.
Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene also took to social media at the time to share the picture of an upside-down American flag. Several other posts flooded social media comparing the United States to a Communist country.

What Does The Law Say?
The unconventional use of the flag steadily became a trend among pro-Trump Republicans, along with terms like “banana republic” and “tyranny” to describe the current state of the nation. The outrage symbolized sort of a “civil war” within the Republican party at the time.
The act might also have something to do with Trump’s especially exhibited reserve about the national flag several times on multiple occasions. In any case, the question that remains is whether or not this symbolism is an acceptable approach to a supposed protest.
According to the US Flag Code, the American flag should not be flown upside down “except as a signal of dire distress in instances of extreme danger to life or property.” Officially, the US Flag Code is considered a law. However, according to Cornell Law School, people breaking this law cannot be charged as there are no federal punishments or enforcement listed in the law for contempt of the code.
