Prince Harry Is Struggling With American Citizenship
The Duke Of Sussex revealed in February 2024 that he has considered applying for U.S. citizenship. When asked about the possibility of him getting it, the Prince said, “I have no idea. … American citizenship is a thought that has crossed my mind, but certainly is not something that is a high priority for me right now.”
According to The Guardian, lawyers told the publication that Harry’s marriage to Meghan Markle would not grant him citizenship, but she may sponsor him for a green card. Immigration lawyer Karin Wolman clarified, “But it’s not instantaneous, there’s no such thing as automatic, and citizenship happens later.”
Additionally, the Prince’s controversial past, including his Nazi regalia, might act as a roadblock to his application. “He has to show good moral character, which means no criminal act or violation of immigration law or act of persecution that would make him inadmissible,” said attorney Glenn Bank.
He will also have to give up his royal status completely. According to U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, “Any applicant who has any titles of heredity or positions of nobility in any foreign state must renounce the title or the position … Failure to renounce the title of position shows a lack of attachment to the Constitution.”
