Why Are Prince Harry And Meghan Markle Getting Compared To Kanye West?

The year 2022 was a mixed bag where there were some endearing moments and a lot of celebrity drama ensued! The Royal Family has been in the limelight for quite some time now. In September 2022, Queen Elizabeth II’s death sent shockwaves across the world and people grieved the monarch’s death. But, there was a lot of behind-the-scenes drama that followed with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle at the center of it. Then, the two grabbed the limelight with their explosive Netflix docuseries ‘Harry & Meghan’. The couple dominates the narrative about their experiences being a part of the Royal Family and the aftermath of their exit.

The other person who had a lion’s share in the limelight is the rap star Kanye West. Ye made headlines throughout the year since divorce from his estranged wife Kim Kardashian. He bullied and harassed Kim, his family, and his ex-boyfriend Pete Davidson. But, the string of obnoxious behavior started with the Paris Fashion Week in October 2022. He showcased shirts with ‘White Lives Matter’ printed on them. It was the origin point of Kanye’s downhill. He went on to spew hate against the Jews community with his anti-Semitism. Due to this, the industry giants have ousted him. But, now, a news outlet has deemed Harry, Meghan, and Ye as “narcissists”.

The editor at Politico, Joanna Weiss penned an op-ed in its ‘Culture Club’ section. The title is ‘2022 Is the Year We All Finally Got Tired of Narcissists’. In the article, Weiss has included some case studies to study narcissism. It included Sam Bankman-Fried, Elizabeth Holmes, and Donald Trump along with the trio. She took the help of certain professionals to rest her case of the varied traits and circumstances that surfaced among these case subjects.

The writer translated her frustrations into words about the once-adorable couple, who were responsible for the origin of her irritation. She called them ‘grandiose narcissists’, who inflate and defend their egos working hard to make believe that they are the best at what they do.

She wrote, “My natural sympathy for the couple started turning to irritation, and it occurred to me that ego has its limits. And it struck me that the overreach that led to the Sussexes’ critically panned mega-series is the same impulse that turned Elon Musk into a terror on Twitter, that prompted Ye to up the ante of outrageous behavior until he crossed the line into blatant antisemitism, that sent Bankman-Fried from the top of the world to a Bahamian jail”.

While the Sussexes were targeted, Ye became the epitome of what happens with extreme adulations. Weiss took Kanye’s example and said, “A narcissist’s constant quest for eyeballs and acclaim can get a lot more dangerous. For the worst of it, see Ye, whose perennial need for attention has evolved from outbursts at awards shows to wearing “White Lives Matter” T-shirts and making antisemitic comments on podcasts, social media platforms, and TV shows — losing, in the process, a lucrative Adidas contract and what was left of the public’s goodwill”.

But, Twitteratis has flagged the article as “racist” and called to remove the article. It did not sit well with them that a person of color “standing up for herself” has to be in the presence of white supremacists.
