‘Abbott Elementary’: What Will Happen To Gregory And Janine After The Season 2 Finale?

There has been a wider focus on larger narratives that have been part of the content mill. This wider angle was concerning cultural representation or well-meaning appropriation. But ‘Abbott Elementary and its representation of Philadelphia have been a great playground for the characters to develop in this mockumentary.

‘Abbott Elementary,’ during the awards season, reached far and wide. Quinta Brunson, the creator and actor in the series, is to be credited for phenomenal writing and character development. Both seasons had a pace that was not too fast to miss a beat in the growth of a character or too slow to be exhausted with their appearances. The season two finale was a much-awaited episode because the audience wanted to see the inception of the love story between Gregory (Tyler James) and Janine (Quinta Brunson). The audience witnessed a confessional, but it was not what they expected.

Episode 20, titled ‘Franklin Institute, is a prelude to the Janine and Gregory romance before going into season three. Many complicated scenarios hindered the development of love between the two characters. When Janine was single, Gregory was dating Amber, and Janine was dating Gregory. Then, Janine started dating Gregory’s friend, Maurice. There were a lot of complicated conflicts that arose. But this slow-burning love is what kept the fans invested.

When the finale began, there were aww-worthy moments between Gregory and Janine. Like Gregory watching ‘Night at the Museum,’ which Janine recommended. However, Maurice changes Janine’s whole perspective on the Bonetown incident. It is where Janine and Gregory told Maurice that the two kissed each other during the ‘Teacher’s Conference’ episode. Mo tells Janine the two are in their ‘selfish eras,’ which shifts the dynamic between the couple.

But there are some bro-to-bro moments we witnessed between Jacob and Gregory. Gregory goes to him to talk about Janine’s changed behavior. He is not certain how to convey his feelings to Ms. Teagues. When Gregory conveys his inhibitions about how they cannot go back to the way things were before, Jacob says, “But there might be a lot of good stuff on the other side,” sharing a ‘bro hug.’ Later, when Gregory and Janine meet to talk and Gregory confesses his feelings, commotion begins when the kids see Barbara in a CPAP machine.

However, the moment of truth arrives when Gregory and Janine go around the museum to find the kids and land near a big museum heart piece. And it is there that the two have a heart-to-heart talk. Janine also confesses her feelings toward Gregory, but she is not ready to turn their relationship into something “real,” keeping the friendship and gusto between the two alive. So, Janine tells the camera crew, “I guess I’m not ready for him.” While Gregory metaphorically addresses a new beginning by planting something “new.”

During an interview with TV Line, Quinta Brunson talked about what the audience can expect in the next season now that Gregory and Janine are honest about their feelings. Quinta said, “I’m so excited to get into it. I think that Gregory has to figure out how he really feels about that information, knowing that, “OK, this person isn’t ready to be with me yet, isn’t ready to take the leap. So do I take that leap with someone else? Do I wait for that person?” And I think there’s probably going to be more conversations about it in the future.”

She continued, “I think Janine, being the “I believe I can do anything” person she is, will kind of be like, “OK, I’m gonna make myself ready. I don’t feel ready yet, but I’m gonna make myself a good enough person to be in a relationship and be ready for this.” Brunson admitted that it will be challenging and exciting for the writers to develop the dynamic further from this point.
