‘House of the Dragon‘ actor Ewan Mitchell, who portrays the complex character of Prince Aemond Targaryen, recently opened up about filming the nude scene that caused a stir among viewers.
Additionally, while talking to Jimmy Fallon on ‘The Tonight Show‘, Mitchell shared his experience filming the scene. He revealed it was a physically uncomfortable one due to an unexpected change in the shooting location.
Ewan Mitchell Talks About The Uncomfortable Filming Environment For ‘House Of The Dragon’ Nude Scene
Mitchell detailed how the production for ‘House of the Dragon’ typically took place in a warm studio environment. However, for the specific scene in question, filming was moved to a different studio that was significantly colder.
This sudden shift in temperature proved to be a challenge for the actor, especially while filming in his birthday suit. “We had wardrobes that were very hot,” Mitchell said. “Head to toe in king’s landing armor, yeah, and then in green leather. So yeah, I just assumed it would be the same temperature [for the nude scene],” he explained.
Despite the unexpected discomfort, Mitchell acknowledged the importance of the scene in portraying Aemond’s character. Additionally, the scene in question has been interpreted as a way to depict Aemond’s vulnerability and defiance. Mitchell himself has said that he felt it was necessary for the scene to be filmed with full nudity to accurately represent Aemond’s emotional state.

Was The Nude Scene Necessary?
The nude scene sparked debate about its necessity. While some felt it was gratuitous, others simply argued that it was not needed. The scene was used to highlight Aemond’s vulnerability. Aemond, usually projecting strength, confesses his regret over Luke’s death while nude and curled up.
Moreover, this contrasts with Daemon’s bravado and reinforces Aemond’s emotional complexity. A lot of people believe that the scene could have achieved its goal without nudity. Additionally, some also joked about not being able to take him seriously due to the scene.
According to Director Clare Kilner Ewan himself thought that the scene was necessary. “Ewan felt it was important for his character to be fully nude in that moment because that’s who Aemond is,” Clare said. “He doesn’t care, and it’s a strong visceral shift,” she added.
Additionally, some viewers have praised the scene for its rawness and honesty. Ultimately, the scene’s necessity is subjective. It undeniably adds a layer of vulnerability to Aemond’s character, but whether it was essential storytelling is a matter of interpretation.
