For years, Chad Michael Murray was closely linked to Lucas Scott, the basketball player and writer he played on ‘One Tree Hill‘. But once his time on the hit teen drama ended in 2009, Murray did not simply move on to the next stage of fame.
Behind the scenes, he began questioning whether he wanted to remain an actor at all, and his reasons had much more to do with growing up in Hollywood than with the fans who made him famous.
Chad Michael Murray Reached A Breaking Point After ‘One Tree Hill’
After leaving ‘One Tree Hill‘, Murray started to struggle with his career. Eventually, he reached a point where walking away seemed like a real option. However, he made it clear that fans had nothing to do with his decision.

“It wasn’t because of the fandom,” he told Interview Magazine. “It was because, when you’re 18 to 25, these formidable years where you’re really cutting your teeth on life experiences and your brain isn’t fully developed, you make mistakes. I mean, gosh, we still screw up when we’re grown-ups.”
At the time, Murray was still young and trying to figure out life while millions of people knew his name. Meanwhile, interest in his personal life kept growing. He briefly married ‘One Tree Hill’ co-star Sophia Bush during his time on the show. Still, Murray kept acting after his 2009 exit and later appeared in projects such as ‘Fruitvale Station‘ and ‘To Write Love on Her Arms‘.
Early Fame Made Murray See Hollywood Differently
As Murray looked back on those years, he admitted success came very quickly. He got major opportunities early in life, but he did not fully understand how the entertainment industry worked. Over time, he realized he needed to rethink his approach and learn more about the business.

“I was that guy that came off the boat and they were like, ‘Oh, yeah, come on the show,’” he continued. “And I didn’t understand the power that the industry can have, the respect that you must give it and give everyone and every moment. So I took a lot of time to reassess it all. It took years of talking to people much smarter than me to get where I wanted to go.”
So, Murray gave himself time to learn and spoke to people he trusted for advice. Gradually, his priorities changed too. Now 43, he shares three children with wife Sarah Roemer. These days, being famous is far less important to him than enjoying his work and spending time with his family.
