David Bowie was reportedly set to return to the strange world of ‘Twin Peaks‘ more than two decades after his memorable appearance in ‘Fire Walk With Me‘.

The music icon had been expected to reprise his role as FBI Agent Phillip Jeffries in the 2017 revival, ‘Twin Peaks: The Return‘. However, the planned appearance never happened, and the team had to find another way to keep Bowie connected to the new story.

Bowie first entered the world of ‘Twin Peaks‘ as FBI Agent Phillip Jeffries in ‘Fire Walk With Me‘. He appeared in a short sequence alongside David Lynch and Kyle MacLachlan. But the scene raised major questions about Jeffries, Dale Cooper, and the strange forces surrounding them.

Years later, those unresolved threads made the character a natural fit for the revival. It brought back many familiar faces and expanded the story introduced in the original series and its movie sequel. The production also operated under extreme secrecy, which kept fans wondering whether Lynch might still have hidden a Bowie surprise.

Harry Goaz, who played the emotional Deputy Andy in the two original series, confirmed that the team had wanted Bowie back. However, Bowie was unable to shoot due to his illness, before passing away from liver cancer after an 18-month private battle on January 10, 2016.

Although Bowie could not film new scenes, his connection to the revival did not disappear. Executive producer Sabrina Sutherland later revealed during a Reddit AMA that Bowie had given permission for the series to use footage from his earlier appearance.

Bowie’s Absence Could Not Remove Jeffries From ‘Twin Peaks: The Return’

This approval allowed Lynch to return to the crucial ‘Fire Walk With Me‘ scene. In the scene, Jeffries suddenly enters the FBI offices, screams about Judy, and accuses Dale Cooper of not being who he really is. The moment became far more important in ‘Twin Peaks: The Return‘. It is especially important as the revival explored mysteries that stretched back to the 1992 film.

Jeffries was the first character to mention Judy. And the two-part finale later established her as a negative entity even more powerful than BOB. The revival also brought Jeffries back in a radically altered form as a mysterious structure often compared to a teakettle. In that state, he remained connected to Cooper’s journey and granted him access to the past.

The possibility of one final Bowie performance had carried extra hope because several other ‘Twin Peaks‘ stars filmed scenes before their deaths. Miguel Ferrer, Warren Frost and Catherine Coulson all completed material for the revival, while Lynch had also stressed that ‘Fire Walk With Me‘ was important to the new series.

The revival eventually assembled a massive 217-member cast. Yet, Phillip Jeffries still became one of the most important figures in ‘The Return‘. And his connection to Judy, Cooper, and the larger mythology changed the final episodes for good.
