Tyland Lannister looked like he had reached the end of the road after the Battle of the Gullet. Episode 5 of ‘House of the Dragon‘ Season 3 changes everything by bringing him back alive.
Even bigger, his return has nothing to do with George R.R. Martin’s ‘Fire & Blood‘. Now, it has left even longtime book readers wondering where the story is heading next.
‘House of the Dragon’ Is Freestyling Now
‘House of the Dragon‘ has changed parts of Fire & Blood before, but Tyland Lannister’s comeback is on another level. Earlier this season, Tyland, played by Jefferson Hall, left Westeros to convince the Triarchy to fight for King Aegon II Targaryen during the ‘Dance of the Dragons‘.
Then came the Battle of the Gullet, where pirate captain Sharako Lohar threw him into the sea and made it look like game over.

Fans were not totally buying it, though. TV logic says if nobody sees a body, the character is probably still alive. And Episode 5 proves everyone right. Tyland suddenly pops up at the refugee camp in Rook’s Rest and reunites with the disguised King Aegon. But the show skips the biggest question.
Nobody explains how Tyland escaped the sea, found the camp, or randomly bumped into Aegon and Larys while they were hiding. He simply walks back into the story as if nothing happened.
The ‘Fire & Blood’ Books Never Did Any Of This
Book fans searching ‘Fire & Blood‘ for answers are out of luck because none of this happens there. George R.R. Martin sends Tyland down a completely different path. Instead of sailing across the Narrow Sea, he stays in King’s Landing until Rhaenyra Targaryen and her dragon riders capture the city.
After the takeover, Tyland ends up in prison and suffers brutal torture as people try to force him to reveal where he hid the royal treasury. The abuse leaves him badly mutilated, and he spends most of the war locked up in chains. His story continues later, but it looks nothing like the version HBO is telling.
Basically, the series has ripped up Tyland’s original playbook. His Episode 5 reunion with Aegon and Larys is brand-new territory, which means every scene involving him is now a mystery, even for fans who know the books inside out.

Episode 5 Might Have Revealed The Next Big Move
Episode 5 also plants the seeds for Tyland’s next mission. ‘Fire & Blood‘ barely explains what Aegon does after secretly escaping King’s Landing, so the show has plenty of space to cook up its own storyline.
Tyland and Larys immediately clash over the plan. Larys wants to get Aegon onto a ship, sail to Essos, and wait until the time is right to strike back. Tyland has a different idea. He wants to head straight to Casterly Rock, gather House Lannister’s forces, and jump back into the war.
However, chaos hits before they can settle the argument. Janos, the self-declared Lord of Rook’s Rest, overhears their conversation and realizes the man standing in front of him is actually King Aegon. He tries to overpower him, but Aegon stabs him to death instead.
But Tyland’s grin says everything. Aegon finally looks ready to stop hiding, and Episode 5 hints that Team Green could be gearing up for a major comeback.
