House of the Dragon’ has been painstakingly working out the character of Rhaenyra Targaryen as a ruler in a state of grief, responsibility, and restraint for two seasons.

The HBO series took a more measured approach, while many fans of George R. R. Martin’s Fire & Blood were hoping for a more explosive start. Now, even Emma D’Arcy acknowledges that they knew fans’ frustrations with Rhaenyra’s hesitation. With season 3, it seems like that patience might finally be rewarded.

One of the main complaints about season 2 was Rhaenyra’s reaction-based nature. She didn’t try to take the Iron Throne when King Viserys died, but rather defended her throne while others advanced the war around her. That creative decision was deliberate, but it was also restrictive, D’Arcy said.

The actor recently revealed that Rhaenyra has been “backed into a corner” for years, always trying to maintain peace and facing massive personal losses.  That emotional tug-of-war made her character more interesting. However, it also made some viewers want to see her finally let go.

Rhaenyra has primarily been in a reactionary position. She spent a lot of time in season 1 and season 2 backed into a corner, treading water to an extent, trying to preserve a very tenuous position. I have shared with an audience a desire for her to move into a more active, front-footed position. I wanted to see what happens when that character stops having to apologize,” she told EW.

Thankfully, D’Arcy teased that Rhaenyra will be much more active in season 3. The queen will not apologize or second-guess herself. Now, she will start to take charge of her powers and ruthlessness, which her enemies seem to already know.

Rhaenyra’s impending transformation is particularly intriguing because prophecy seems to be a part of it. The HBO version linked her to Aegon the Conqueror’s vision of saving the world from a future darkness, whereas Martin’s book didn’t do that. The faith might now prove deadly.

D’Arcy teased that Rhaenyra’s conviction might slowly radicalize her and make her quest for the throne more akin to religious fervor. That is, she might not feel like just in a power struggle anymore; she may feel like she is meant to rule for the survival of the realm.

History has proven that leaders who think that destiny is on their side never stop at moderation. If it’s a true change in tone in season 3, ‘House of the Dragon’ could finally get the ruthless, emotionally broken queen fans have been hoping for since the show’s start.
