The war for the Iron Throne is about to push Ewan Mitchell’s Aemond Targaryen into terrifying new territory in ‘House of the Dragon‘ season 3. As the third season spirals deeper into chaos, Mitchell is teasing a far more dangerous, ruthless, and emotionally layered version of the one-eyed prince.

From bloody battles to psychological unraveling, Aemond appears ready to become one of the deadliest forces in Westeros as the hit HBO drama charges toward its endgame.

Season 3 of ‘House of the Dragon‘ begins with the war between the Greens and the Blacks fully exploding across the realm. According to Mitchell in an EW interview, the show wastes no time getting into the chaos. “It’s all-out war,” the actor said. It’s just a blitz straight out of the gate.

After the events of season 2, Aegon is no longer sitting safely in King’s Landing. His absence creates a major opening for Aemond, who now has his eye firmly on the throne. Mitchell warned that his character would become even more violent this season. “Aemond is definitely bloodying his sword this season,” he teased. “I think he’s the Fifth Horseman of the Apocalypse. He’s coming in shock and awe.

Trailers for the new season already showed Aemond attacking Harrenhal and walking through dark castle halls in full armor. Mitchell explained that Aemond’s controlled behavior actually makes him scarier. “There’s something scary about not showing everything and keeping your cards close to your chest,” he said. “Aemond is almost this force, an ideal that is relentless. He’s just continually moving, sometimes at the expense of everyone else.

The actor also compared Aemond’s journey to Robert De Niro’s Travis Bickle in ‘Taxi Driver‘. Mitchell said viewers may start realizing they never truly understood Aemond in the first place. “How on earth could I ever think that I understood that character in the first place?” he said. “You barely recognize him.”

Season 3 Will Show A More Human Side Of Aemond Targaryen

Even though Aemond is becoming more dangerous, Mitchell wanted season 3 to reveal more of the man behind the cold and terrifying image. In earlier seasons, Aemond often came across as emotionless and almost unstoppable. This time, Mitchell wanted to show a deeper side to the character.

In season 3, I was really looking forward to pulling back that veneer,” Mitchell explained, “taking him out of that Terminator-esque horror-icon movie and making him more human.”

Mitchell believes a major turning point for Aemond came after he turned Vhagar’s fire on Aegon during the Battle of Rook’s Rest. That moment changed him completely and pushed him further into darkness. Still, the actor thinks the true horror in ‘House of the Dragon‘ does not come from the dragons. “I feel like it is a horror TV show, but the monsters are the human beings in it,” Mitchell said. “It’s not so much the dragons.

As ‘House of the Dragon‘ heads into its biggest and most violent season yet, Aemond is clearly becoming one of the most important players in the war. Mitchell’s comments suggest fans will see both the terrifying and emotional sides of the prince as the battle for the Iron Throne continues.
