When ‘Friends’ premiered in 1994, nobody involved could have predicted that the sitcom would become one of the most influential television series ever made. Before the global fame, record-breaking salaries, and packed schedules arrived, the six stars were simply a group of young actors navigating the early days of a new network comedy.

Jennifer Aniston recently shared a nostalgic memory from that period, revealing that the cast had a special tradition during the show’s earliest seasons. Long before streaming and social media transformed television viewing habits, the group would regularly come together to watch new episodes as they aired.

According to Aniston, in her recent ‘Friends‘ reunion with co-star Lisa Kudrow for Variety, the cast made a habit of gathering at each other’s homes to watch the series.

We would gather in the very, very beginning,” Aniston recalled, joking that it happened “back in the 1900s.” She explained that the cast would meet up “to watch the show at one of our homes.

The tradition included Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, Matthew Perry, and David Schwimmer. Watching episodes together allowed them to celebrate the series as a group while sharing the excitement surrounding its growing popularity.

The story also highlights how close the cast became during the show’s formative years. Their chemistry on screen was one of the biggest reasons for the sitcom’s success, and those off-screen gatherings helped strengthen the friendships audiences came to love.

Why The Watch Parties Eventually Ended

As ‘Friends’ grew into a television phenomenon, keeping the tradition alive became increasingly difficult.

Kudrow explained that the cast eventually “got busy.” What started as a simple weekly gathering became harder to organize as each actor’s career expanded beyond the sitcom. Film projects, promotional commitments, and demanding production schedules left little room for regular watch parties.

For Kudrow, there was another reason she stopped keeping up with every episode. “There were whole episodes that I hadn’t seen,” she admitted. “I just couldn’t sit there at home and have anybody walk by seeing me watching a show that I’m in. Because it felt embarrassing to me.”

Her confession offers an amusing contrast to the way fans consumed the series. While millions of viewers eagerly watched every episode, one of its biggest stars sometimes avoided watching the sitcom altogether.

Even though the tradition eventually faded, Aniston’s recollection provides another glimpse into the unique bond shared by the cast. More than 30 years after the series debuted, stories from those early days continue to resonate with fans who remain fascinated by the friendships at the heart of one of television’s most enduring comedies.
