Phoebe Buffay’s quirky, cheerful personality is a big part of what makes ‘Friends‘ so memorable. But the creators originally had a completely different idea for her character. In the early version of the show, Phoebe was written as a goth girl with a darker, more brooding personality.

That version of Phoebe could have changed the group’s vibe entirely. So what changed along the way? How did that dark concept turn into the lovable, unpredictable character we still adore today?

You will be surprised to learn that the writers of ‘Friends‘ created Phoebe’s character to be much more serious and emotionally intense, completely opposite to what we saw on-screen. In fact, early versions of the character had a lot in common with a dark, goth-style personality.

And that’s the reason the casting process looked very different. Things progressed to the point that actor Janeane Garofalo was also initially considered for the role because of the cynical tone the creators had in mind. Imagine if that version had made it to the screen, Phoebe would have brought a completely different vibe to the group.

But everything changed when Lisa Kudrow came in. The natural charm and humour she had didn’t really match the darker idea the creators had in mind. So, instead of forcing their decision on Kudrow, they rewrote Phoebe’s character completely to fit her personality. However, the creators didn’t change it all.

The Creators Didn’t Change It All

While they changed the characterisation of Phoebe‘s personality, they didn’t change her backstory. She still had one of the darkest pasts in the group. Her dad abandoned her, her mom committed suicide, and she came to know that the woman she knew as her mom was just a friend of her biological mother (who came into the picture much later).

Instead of making her character gloomy, the show did the opposite. Phoebe would talk about her past life in the most cheerful, casual way, which made her seem funnier, yet we sympathised with her.  And that gave Chandler the perfect chance to take the sarcastic spot in the group.

Now, we can’t even imagine ‘Friends‘ without the Phoebe we know, her OG ‘Smelly Cat’ song, her strange and ethical beliefs, and the unpredictable behaviour in every episode.
