Prime Video’sย ‘Elle‘ย brings the beloved Elle Woods back to screens, but this time fans meet her long before Harvard Law School. The prequel series follows the iconic character during her high school years.ย
While the show stays true to the heart ofย ‘Legally Blonde‘, it also makes several major changes to Elle’s backstory to build a fresh story that can continue for multiple seasons.
‘Elle’ Shows Us A New Side Of Elle Woods’ Story

Twenty-five years after Reese Witherspoon introduced audiences to Elle Woods inย ‘Legally Blonde‘, the new Prime Video series explores a chapter fans had never seen before. This time, Lexi Minetree plays a teenage Elle as she navigates high school, and gave viewers a much deeper look at the character’s life before college.
And, because the story takes place years beforeย ‘Legally Blonde‘, the creators made several changes to expand her world while still respecting the original film. Their approach has already paid off, asย ‘Elle‘ย has earned a season two renewal.
Even with those changes, the show’s creative team never wanted to lose the qualities that made Elle Woods so popular. Co-showrunner Laura Kittrell told E! News, “The goal was always to keep the optimism of the original character, the joy and the kindness, and making sure those qualities that are inherent to her were always there for us.”
Likewise, co-showrunner Caroline Dries explained that the original movie remained the foundation for every creative decision. “The movie is our North star, so we were always deferential to what happened in the movie, tonally and plot-wise,” she said. So, although the series introduces new storylines, it still includes severalย ‘Legally Blonde‘ย Easter eggs while presenting a different version of Elle’s teenage years.
Elle’s New Home Is One Of The Biggest Changes

Perhaps the biggest difference betweenย ‘Elle‘ย andย ‘Legally Blonde‘ย is the setting. In the film, Elle grows up in wealthy Bel Air, Los Angeles, before attending the fictional California University of Los Angeles. The prequel, however, shows the Woods family leaving sunny Los Angeles and moving to rainy Seattle, forcing Elle to adjust to a completely different lifestyle and school environment.

According to Caroline Dries, the move is about much more than geography. “Itโs bleak, itโs rainy, itโs cloudy, and thatโs what sheโs feeling inside,” she told TV Line. “But itโs not just the weather. The kids are really anti-establishment, and Elle has never even thoughtย [in that way].” Because of this change, the series places Elle in situations that the movie version of the character never had to face.
The Series Fills In Missing Pieces Of Elle’s Past

The series also expands Elle’s family story in a major way. Inย ‘Legally Blonde‘, her parents were simply credited as “Elle’s Father” and “Elle’s Mother.” This time, Tom Everett Scott plays plastic surgeon Dr. Wyatt Woods, while June Diane Raphael stars as Eva Woods. Their move to Seattle happens after Wyatt botches a nose job for a high-profile patient and decides to put some distance between his medical practice and Hollywood, giving the family a much more detailed backstory than the films ever offered.
The show also reveals how Elle gets her beloved chihuahua, Bruiser. Before the family moves to Seattle, her parents surprise her with the puppy to help ease the difficult transition. That same dog later becomes the loyal companion fans know from bothย ‘Legally Blonde‘ย films.
Another noticeable change is the absence of Warner Huntington III. The future boyfriend who motivates Elle to apply to Harvard in Legally Blonde does not appear in season one. Instead, the series focuses entirely on Elle’s personal growth before that chapter of her life begins.
The prequel also points Elle toward a different dream. Rather than showing an early interest in law, the teenage Elle hopes to earn a summer internship atย Cosmopolitan. However, after arriving in Seattle, she helps solve a local mystery, quietly hinting that the sharp instincts which later make her a successful lawyer were already part of her long before Harvard. Even the actress playing the younger Elle focused on preserving the character’s original spirit.
