Is Brie Larson’s Apple TV Series ‘Lessons In Chemistry’ Based On A Book?

Brie Larson is making a move to the OTT space with the drama series ‘Lessons In Chemistry.’ She plays Elizabeth Zott, a brilliant scientist fired from her job in the latest Apple TV series. Determined to make a change, she hosts a cooking show that inspires the homemakers of America.

Brie Larson’s association with the streaming giants will also see her as an executive producer on the show. The premise is not a real story despite being about a female scientist. The show is based on The New York Times bestseller novel from last year, now being adapted for episodic form.

The source material for the Apple TV series ‘Lessons In Chemistry’ is Bonnie Garmus‘ novel of a similar title. Hailing from Seattle, she worked as a copywriter and creative director in the US, Switzerland, and Colombia. Released last year, ‘Lessons In Chemistry’ is her debut novel.

‘Lessons In Chemistry’ is about Elizabeth Zott (played by Brie Larson), who educates housewives in chemistry instead of teaching them to make supper for their families. The author drew inspiration from Betty Friedan’s 1963 classic ‘The Feminine Mystique.’ The driving incident that made Bonnie Garmus write was a bad day at work. She was upset when a male colleague took credit for her work, inspiring her to write fiction.
