Evanna Lynch, who played Luna Lovegood in the ‘Harry Potter‘ movies, has finally spoken about the new HBO television series, and her feelings are a mix of wistfulness and genuine warmth.
The 34-year-old recently spoke to RTE Arts & Media Correspondent Evelyn O’Rourke at the Cork Midsummer Festival, where she is currently in a play called Pool (No Water). She said she will feel “a little envious” when the new young actors start working on the show. Those actors are Dominic McLaughlin as Harry, Arabella Stanton as Hermione, and Alastair Stout as Ron. “I will be watching. And I will be a little envious, but I will mostly be happy for those young actors to have that amazing experience and to work on some of the best-written material as their first gig. That’s incredibly special,” Lynch said.
Why Longer TV Format Excites the Former Luna Lovegood Star

The new show will air on HBO Max on Christmas Day this year, turning all seven of J.K. Rowling’s books into a television series. Lynch said the books were “my sanctuary as a child, as a shy person.” She thinks the longer TV format is a great chance to tell the story better. She pointed out that the old movies had to keep to the main plot because they only had about two hours.
“That was the one thing with the films, was that we had to kind of stick to the essential plot because they had to be two hours,” she explained. “So, I think there is so much more to mine“.
Evanna Lynch’s Lasting Bond with the Wizarding World

Lynch has a deep history with the series and was a huge fan before she got the part. She got the role through an open casting call. During her screen test with Daniel Radcliffe, she was so nervous she kept forgetting her lines. The director, David Yates, thought her dazed quality was perfect for Luna.

Even though the last movie came out years ago, Lynch still loves the ‘Harry Potter‘ world. She has said before that she rarely watches the films because they are “too emotional.” But she still feels a strong bond with the fans. “The fans have kept that world very alive in my life,” she said in a previous interview. “I continue to try to find that sense of belonging in other communities, but none have proved quite so profound a match yet“.
What the ‘Harry Potter’ Reboot Means for Fans

People are excited to see how the new cast will play characters that fans already know so well. For Lynch, the story itself is what really matters. She has spoken against the idea that the old cast and J.K. Rowling do not get along. She also stays focused on the message of acceptance that her character stands for.
Thinking back on Luna, Lynch once described her character’s appeal: “That lovely message of ‘I’m weird but I’m ok,’ you know. I’m happy to spread that“. She is ready to watch the new series and thinks the magic is still something to celebrate.
The new ‘Harry Potter‘ show is set to come out on HBO Max on December 25, 2026.
