In ‘House of the Dragon’ season 3, Rhaenyra Targaryen has finally taken the Iron Throne, but even that has not brought her relief. It was easy to imagine that, after losing her two youngest Velaryon sons, Jacaerys and Lucerys, she would be reunited with her youngest son, Joffrey, when he returned safely to King’s Landing.
Rather, the series offers something much more heart-wrenching.
Joffrey’s Scene In ‘House Of the Dragon’ Is More Heartbreaking Than It First Appears
Instead of accepting her son, Rhaenyra keeps her distance, only coming up to her son to gaze upon him as he sleeps, before leaving quietly. It is more than words can convey, and the short scene shows how much the war has affected the once-loving mother.

Rhaenyra is not cold towards Joffrey because she doesn’t love him. It’s the opposite. When she returns to King’s Landing, she knows that her family has paid a high price for the Iron Throne. The kingdom is in turmoil, the enemies are mustering, and it is a perilous world around her.
With two sons already dead in her arms, Rhaenyra might feel that she can’t risk opening her heart again, or else she’ll find herself unable to cope with another loss. It also shows how tired she is.
Her hope and determination have been replaced by constant grief, political pressure, and fear that every victory brings another devastating sacrifice. Her reluctance to accept Joffrey is more of a silent heartbreak than rejection.
The Books Suggest An Even Darker Future
George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood readers are aware that Joffrey’s story is one of the most heart-wrenching in the Dance of the Dragons. The young prince desperately tries to save his dragon Tyraxes as unrest erupts in King’s Landing during the Storming of the Dragonpit.

Despite his mother’s objections, he tries to ride Syrax, Rhaenyra’s dragon, for a ride, but dragons do not normally accept riders other than their own bonded dragons. The decision is a death sentence. During his flight, Joffrey is thrown from the dragon and suffers fatal injuries, dying before he has a chance to inherit the Iron Throne.
It’s too early to tell if HBO will go through these events verbatim, but the emotional foundation is being set. Rhaenyra’s reticence from Joffrey is no longer strange; it’s the instinct of a mother who’s afraid. If the series follows George R.R. Martin’s story, that heartbreaking scene may eventually be remembered as the last peaceful moment Rhaenyra ever shared with Joffrey.
