The Boys’ had been the face of Prime Video’s superhero franchise for years. The ultra-violent satire became a cultural phenomenon by taking traditional superhero conventions and turning them upside down, giving some of the most memorable villains in television history.

Now that the series is done, there’s another caped hero in the spotlight, and people are already accepting the change. ‘Spider-Noir’, Prime’s latest superhero series, has already become one of the best genre shows on the platform.

Spider-Noir’ is a hard-boiled private investigator, Ben Reilly, who is brought back into the fray when a new breed of deadly criminals strikes New York City in the 1930s. The show is very much influenced by film noir, with dark streets, dark rooms, and dark characters filling every episode.

Cage’s performance is what really makes this series great. He is completely dedicated to the character, playing his emotional side alongside the crazy energy that has been a part of many of his greatest performances. From tracking down a murderer to fending off new super villains, Cage’s character is always a breath of fresh air.

The Boys’ universe expanded, and they set up several storylines in its later seasons. However, ‘Spider-Noir’ is very focused. The first season is a contained story, with clear character motivations and strong emotional stakes, so viewers can get invested in the story from the very first episode.

The decision to air all eight episodes simultaneously has been a boon to the show, too. The fans can follow the story at their own speed, which allows them to enjoy the atmosphere and the gradual development of the characters more.

Most importantly, ‘Spider-Noir’ has shown that superhero stories don’t have to have a huge crossover event or universe-building to be successful. The series has been one of the biggest surprises of the year, focusing on the characters and the visuals, and a strong central mystery.

As Prime Video moves beyond ‘The Boys‘ era, ‘Spider-Noir’ looks more than capable of leading the platform’s next generation of superhero storytelling.
