In ‘When We Are In Need,’ a preacher reads a verse to a group of frail, frightened human beings. He turns to a troubled young girl. She asks for her father to be buried, a request he denies. The man who denies the burial is David (Scott Shepherd). He’s a preacher and the leader of this community. The man who is not to be buried in the same man Joel killed in the last episode to kill Ellie. Not far away from Ellie and Joel, try to get through another day.

Thus, bound by fate to Ellie and Joel, David (Scott Shepherd) and his aide James (Troy Baker) look for both. While James seeks revenge, David would be glad to see Joel live and has plans for Ellie to join them. He’d instead get some supplies and bring them back to the people. They find themselves at the barrel of Ellie’s rifle. She trades penicillin for food but soon finds herself fighting a whole of men.

Outnumbered and out weaponed, she hands a dying Joel a knife and takes off on a horse. She doesn’t get too far, waking up as David’s captive. Joel, meanwhile, has managed to stand up on his feet. Now with Ellie in danger, his vengeance returns. He captures David’s men and, through some old-fashioned torture, finds Ellie in a Silver City resort.

When she regains consciousness, Ellie finds herself in a cage. Outside, David circles. While he may call himself a man of the cloth, he’s just another devil with a skin-of-a-kind human being. Recognizing Ellie’s “violent heart,” he invites Ellie to become a part of their group. A disgusted Ellie rejects him, calling him a sickening man.

On his way to rescue Ellie, Joel finds decapitated human bodies hung upside-down for food. David is unfazed by being called a cannibal. For him, it has what the world has come. He does what he can to keep stomachs and souls. David is another character from the video game included in the HBO adaptation of ‘The Last Of Us.’ In the video game, David is voiced and motion captured by Nolan North. In the television series, the character is played by Scott Shepherd.

In the video game and the HBO adaptation, his death comes at the hands of Ellie. The difference to the story of his death is in the video games, Ellie keeps stabbing David until Joel drags her away. However, in the show, no such thing happens. After killing David, Ellie runs as fast as she can. Joel, still alive and kicking, holds her and embraces her. Reunited at last, they make the journey together.
