The Holocaust is possibly the darkest chapter in history and to show the sufferings of the people who died or made it through to freedom, barely feeling like a human being, on the screen can be a difficult task. ‘The Tattooist Of Auschwitz‘, written by Australian author Heather Morris, attempts to recreate those horrors interspersed with hope based on what went on during World War II in concentration camps.
The now adapted drama follows the real-life story of Slovakian Jew Lale Sokolov who is imprisoned in an Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp. He is given the duty to tattoo identification numbers on the people brought in by the Nazis. There are hundreds and thousands of such devastated souls who are transported to the camp packed in trains like cattle, and Lale’s job is to brand them for their new life. In between unimaginable hardships and surrounded by violence, he finds love. Here is everything you need to know about ‘The Tattooist of Auschwitz’.

The Harrowing Yet Hopeful Plot Of ‘The Tattooist Of Auschwitz’
The trailer of the historical drama starts with an optimistic note: “We must keep living“, and that’s the spirit of the story too. No explanation is needed for the inhuman acts carried out by Hitler and his supporters. The huge area of the concentration camps trapped countless Jews and obliterated their stories. But such stories have a way of coming out because the only way to be is to do everything to “keep living“. That’s what Lale did as the tattooist, for himself, for his countrymen, and for the love of his life, Gita.
It’s an impossible pain and guilt for Lale to take away the identity of the others in the camp with his ink. So it took him 60 years to find the courage to tell his self-experienced story to the world which turned into a novel and now a series titled ‘The Tattooist of Auschwitz‘.
