‘Cilka’s Journey’: Sequel To ‘The Tattooist Of Auschwitz’
After the worldwide success of the first novel, ‘The Tattooist of Auschwitz’, Heather Morris released a second book and a sequel to the story. ‘The Tattooist of Auschwitz’ is the tale of Slovakian Jew Lale Sokolov, an Auschwitz prisoner who fell in love with a girl he tattooed on. This is based on the time when the Nazis rounded up Jews and put them in concentration camps.
After readers loved this love story against all odds, it was adapted into a series as well. Now Heather Morris has released a sequel titled ‘Cilka’s Journey’. The book is “based on a true love story”. Cilka, based on the real-life of Cecília Kováčová, was a character in ‘The Tattooist of Auschwitz’.

What Is Cilka’s Story?
Like her previous novel, Heather Morris was inspired by yet another true story to write her second novel. The story has been inspired by the life of Cecília Kováčová, another prisoner at Auschwitz. Cilka was 16 in 1942 when she entered Auschwitz. However, her looks and long beautiful hair forced her to become the commandant, SS-Obersturmführer Johann Schwarzhuber’s sex slave.
After her liberation at the age of 19, she was charged by the Russians as a collaborator and sent to the Siberian Gulag. Cilka’s fate is the cruelest as she faces new and old challenges in this new place. As she starts to tend to the ill in the camp, Cilka is astonished that after all the cruelty she still has space in her heart for love.
Cilka falls in love with a man called Alexandr. Author Heather Morris also revealed how she took two trips to Slovakia to meet “several people who knew Cilka and her husband” as research for her book.
