TV shows have, unfortunately, a reputation for overstaying their welcome. But not these ones. These series knew exactly what stories they wanted to tell and, crucially, when it was time to walk away.

While wanting a beloved show to continue forever is completely understandable, dragging it out is just a serious hit at its legacy. Sometimes, a painful but striking goodbye is the way to go. Here are the top 10 such TV shows that ended at the perfect time.

10. Friends (1994-2004)

As a definitive comfort show for generations worldwide, the ending of ‘Friends’ was the end of an era. It was never going to be an easy goodbye, yet its finale delivered one of the most satisfying farewells of all time.

“The Last One” remains one of the most watched episodes in television history, where the entire world united for one last laugh, as well as to cry. After winning a special place in all our hearts, the beloved gang moves on to a new chapter of their life at the perfect time.

9. Brooklyn Nine-Nine (2013-2021)

The finale of ‘Brooklyn Nine-Nine’ was a full-circle moment for the entire gang. The show began when Captain Holt entered another chapter in his career, becoming the commander of the 99th precinct. By the end, the entire gang had come a long way, entering a brand-new chapter in their careers.

One thing that ‘Brooklyn Nine-Nine’ managed to do, and that remains iconic in sitcom history, is never reducing its characters to exaggerated versions of themselves. Instead, the finale still shows them full of life, with a bright future ahead of them. As much as we would have liked the show to end on the 9th season, just for the running joke, “The Last Day” came at the perfect time.

8. The Leftovers (2014-2017)

One thing that ‘The Leftovers’ didn’t forget till the end is that some mysteries just need to stay ambiguous. Across just three seasons, the series shifted its focus from exploring the unknown to exploring the grey areas of human life.

The main message remained the same till the end: how do people learn to live with the unknown and keep moving forward? The series finale may have left us with many questions unresolved, but it was full of hope and meaning and was the best conclusion to the story.

7. Parks And Recreation (2009-2015)

As much as it is compared to ‘The Office’, ‘Parks and Recreation’ didn’t fall into the same trap as its predecessor. It didn’t drag on and, instead, concluded with each character finding a meaningful ending.

Leslie finally achieves her greatest professional milestone, and so does every character whose growth brilliantly reflects the journey they have taken throughout the series. After seven seasons, the show ended in the same fresh and distinct way it started.

6. Schitt’s Creek (2015-2020)

Knowing how hard it is for sitcoms not to drag on and find that perfect ending, it is very surprising how many have found a place in this list. ‘Schitt’s Creek’ gave the Rose family the kind of ending their journey had earned.

After learning to value love, friendship, and each other, everyone moves into a new chapter of their lives that will be shaped by these lessons. Johnny and Moira moving to California, Alexis heading to New York, and David marrying Patrick at the end just felt like the natural conclusion.

5. Succession (2018-2023)

It was surprising that, though ‘Succession’ had become an HBO staple, the network still decided to end the series right after four seasons. But it is for the best in hindsight. As much as we loved the ruthless family war, it had to come to an end at some point.

And the showrunners couldn’t have found a better opportunity to do that than when neither Shiv, Kendall, nor Roman wins. Instead, Tom Wambsgans quietly maneuvers his way to the top. It was swift yet perfectly impactful.

4. The Good Place (2016-2020)

There couldn’t have been a better ending for ‘The Good Place’. What we got is a beautiful reminder that people are capable of change for the better, no matter how late they begin. Eleanor and her friends become better versions of themselves, and only then do they choose to leave the Good Place.

The show went through some pretty bonkers plot twists, but it didn’t need to drag it any longer. The ending marked the main characters’ final realization that true peace requires an end. One by one, they embrace finality. Of course, except for Michael, who becomes human and leaves us with one amazing final piece of advice: “Take it sleazy”.

3. Derry Girls (2018-2022)

Few sitcoms have woven history into their characters’ coming-of-age story quite like ‘Derry Girls’. And it ended exactly in that same way. The Good Friday Agreement referendum, a watershed event in Northern Ireland’s history, serves as the backdrop for the series’ finale.

It beautifully captures the girls’ standing at the end of season 3. They are just closing a huge chapter of their life to head into adulthood, much like Derry itself. ‘Derry Girls’ should also receive extra points for coming full circle with The Cranberries’ “Dreams” and showing that iconic mural at the very end.

2. Fleabag (2016-2019)

As heartbreaking as the ending of ‘Fleabag’ is, we can all agree that it was the perfect ending we could have asked for. The series ran for only two seasons, but the way it solidified its place in modern pop culture in that short time truly deserves respect.

After spending the entire series breaking the fourth wall and talking to the audience, Fleabag chooses to face her struggles head-on. Her final walk away from the camera becomes a cathartic symbol of self-acceptance, healing, and moving forward.

1. Breaking Bad (2008-2013)

Walter White starts out ‘Breaking Bad’ as a man who just found out that he has cancer and is determined to leave his family better off before he dies. So, like any normal person, he decides to open an entire drug ring and destroys everything he loves.

The ending of ‘Breaking Bad’ was just what was needed for him to come full circle. He uses his last moment to help Jesse escape, giving him one final chance to start over. ‘Breaking Bad’ had an enormous cultural legacy, which is why it is very surprising that it lasted for only five seasons. But it is because of this very tightly controlled narrative that the ending remains so striking and iconic today.
