Nick Jonas nearly joined one of Disney’s biggest animated franchises, but a poorly prepared audition ended his chances before he could land the role.
More than a decade later, the Jonas Brothers singer finally shared how his attempt to play Kristoff in ‘Frozen‘ went seriously wrong.
Nick Jonas Auditioned to Play Kristoff in ‘Frozen’

Nick discussed the failed audition during Tuesday’s episode of the Hey Jonas! podcast, which he hosts alongside his brothers Joe and Kevin Jonas. ‘Frozen‘ stars Kristen Bell, Idina Menzel, and Josh Gad joined the brothers as guests. Bell voiced Anna, Menzel played Elsa, and Gad brought Olaf to life in the 2013 animated film.
“I went in for Kristoff,” Nick said of the character played by Jonathan Groff. “I went in and they said, ‘Okay, what are you going to be singing today?’ I said, ‘Oh, I don’t know.’ They said, ‘What do you mean you don’t know?’ They’re like, ‘Do you have your sheet music?’ And I said, ‘No, no one told me I had.…,’ and so I just said, ‘Can you play something from,’ I don’t know what I said, some musical theater song. And I bombed the audition. It was terrible.”
Bell responded with a perfectly timed joke: “That must have been why you didn’t get it.” Nick admitted she was right, while Gad playfully supported the singer by saying, “Look, I’ll say it here. You have such better chemistry with Kristen than Groff.” The comment made everyone laugh.
Nick Jonas Jokes He Would Have Been the Better Choice

Nick made it clear that he had nothing against the actor who eventually secured the role. “I love Jonathan Groff,” said Nick, before playfully adding, “But I do think it would have been better to cast me.”

Kevin then asked whether Nick had ever worked again with the professional team representing him during the audition. Nick’s answer suggested he had moved on completely since the experience. “I’ve changed agencies three times since then,” Nick shared.
The casting disappointment also did not stop him from watching or appreciating the movie. “I didn’t spite-watch it,” he assured the group. “I really did enjoy it the first time.” Millions of viewers clearly agreed, as ‘Frozen‘ earned $1.3 billion at the worldwide box office. Its 2019 sequel proved even more successful and brought in another $1.5 billion globally.
Missing out on Kristoff did not slow down Nick’s entertainment career. He continues to make music with Joe and Kevin as the Jonas Brothers, and the trio will also appear in a new sequel connected to their own ‘Camp Rock‘ franchise.
