Character deaths have always been one of television’s biggest talking points. Whether it’s fan-favourite characters being sacrificed for the story, actors deciding to leave shows entirely, or some shocking twist that the showrunners thought would be a good idea, TV shows have delivered countless unforgettable farewells.
But not every exit lands the way writers intend. Some deaths are so poorly thought out and laughable that they leave us scratching our heads at the absurdity. From lazy writing to endings that feel straight-up insulting, here are 10 of the stupidest ways characters were killed off in TV shows.
10. Tyler Lockwood in ‘The Vampire Diaries’
In the season 8 episode ‘You Decided That I Was Worth Saving’, Tyler meets a meaningless death that feels convenient only for the plot. After being absent for much of the show, Tyler suddenly returns, only to be killed by Damon, who is under Sybil’s control.
Rather than giving the character a proper send-off, it seemed like the show only brought him back to prove how far Damon had fallen. Instead of sacrificing one of the characters who was actually present, the writers simply remembered Tyler. Even more frustratingly, Tyler barely fights back. Instead, all he does is stand there and talk to Damon.

9. Maya in ‘Pretty Little Liars’
The show is known for its many twisted storylines, but Maya’s death in ‘Pretty Little Liars’ was one of its stupidest and laziest twists. She was a fan-favourite character, and we loved Emily and Maya’s relationship, only for her to be killed off-screen by a random stalker who had no connection to the series’ central plot.
Rather than serving any real purpose, her death seemed to exist primarily to clear the way for Emily’s relationship with Paige. The abrupt and disconnected ending feels unnecessarily cruel and careless.
8. Dan Conner in ‘Roseanne’
Dan Conner’s death might just be the most confusing fake-out in television history. After suffering a heart attack during his daughter’s wedding, Dan appears to recover and remains part of the following season.
But in the season nine finale, it is revealed that he actually died, with the entire season existing only in Roseanne’s imagination as part of a book she was writing. In 2018, the revival simply brought him back alive, explaining that his death had only existed in the fictional book. The showrunners really needed to decide what they wanted to do with the character.
7. Tracy in ‘How I Met Your Mother’
The ending of ‘How I Met Your Mother’ is notorious, and rightfully so. After nine seasons dedicated to Ted Mosby’s journey to meet the love of his life, viewers are given only a brief amount of time with Tracy before learning that she died from an illness that is barely even explained.
The revelation felt rushed, and we never got the chance to truly know the character. It seemed as though her death existed primarily to reunite Ted with Robin, making the show’s long-awaited payoff feel more like a cheap plot device.
6. Derek Shepherd in ‘Grey’s Anatomy’
Dr Derek Shepherd’s death in ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ remains one of the show’s most debated moments. After surviving a serious car accident, it initially appears that McDreamy will recover.
Instead, he is taken to a different hospital where the medical staff fails to recognize the severity of his injuries and makes critical mistakes that ultimately cost him his life. For many fans, the tragedy wasn’t just his death; it was the fact that it could have been entirely prevented.

5. Drake Ramoray in ‘Friends’
We have to admit that not every ridiculous TV writing decision deserves to be hated. In fact, we actually loved Dr Drake Ramoray’s stupid exit. To write Joey off the soap ‘Days of Our Lives’, the writers had his character fall down an elevator shaft, leaving him in a permanent coma. Ironically, it is revealed that his head injuries were so severe that the only doctor who could have saved him was himself.
It was completely over the top, but in the best possible way. He was later revived with another character’s brain, making the storyline even more brilliantly ridiculous. We don’t actually see him die again in ‘Friends’, though in ‘Joey’, he is killed off once more after being accidentally stabbed during surgery by a nurse who mistakes him for her unfaithful husband.
4. Robert Romano in ‘ER’
Dr Robert Romano’s death in the long-running series ‘ER’ was one of the clearest signs that the show had started to lose its touch. After previously surviving a helicopter accident that cost him an arm, Romano is bizarrely killed when another helicopter crashes onto the hospital and crushes him.
The sequence quickly descends into chaos, with lacklustre CGI that makes the supposedly tragic moment unintentionally comedic. Somehow, instead of a heartbreaking farewell, the scene leaves us laughing at its sheer absurdity.
3. Carl Grimes in ‘The Walking Dead’
Carl Grimes’ death in ‘The Walking Dead’ shocked fans for all the wrong reasons. As one of the series’ central characters, and after surviving countless life-threatening situations throughout the show, he is killed after suffering a walker bite that happens entirely off camera.
The nature of his exit felt completely abrupt and random, and had the opposite emotional impact from what the writers intended. It felt like very little effort had gone into the storyline, resulting in a deeply unsatisfying conclusion for longtime viewers.
2. Daenerys Targaryen in ‘Game of Thrones’
Few television deaths have sparked as much backlash as Daenerys Targaryen’s fate in ‘Game of Thrones’. After years of building her into one of television’s most iconic female characters, her ending left many fans disappointed.
She commanded dragons, conquered kingdoms, and walked through fire unburnt. Yet, she dies at the hands of a man with a knife. While her transformation into the “Mad Queen” was meant to justify the ending, it felt far too rushed and unconvincing. For a series on such an epic scale, her final moments felt anticlimactic in the worst possible way.

Over the course of its 15 seasons, we saw Dean Winchester die and be resurrected so many times that it became impossible to count. But his final death in the series finale was just too bizarre and lazy.
After surviving fights with demons, angels, Death, and even God himself, the legendary hunter dies after accidentally being impaled on a rusty nail. What makes it even more laughable is that he manages to deliver a five-minute monologue while he is supposedly dying. As emotional as the monologue was, we couldn’t help but laugh at the sheer absurdity of the scene.
