HBO’s ‘House of the Dragon‘ is one of the most anticipated television series of this year. A prequel to the popular fantasy series ‘Game Of Thrones‘, the series is created by Martin and Ryan J. Condal. It is slated to premiere on August 21 and fans cannot contain their excitement for it.
‘House of the Dragon‘ has been in the making since 2019 right after ‘Game of Thrones‘ concluded. The latter’s finale was highly criticized for several reasons. We can hope the prequel series proves to be better. So let’s find out about the cast, character, plot, and other details of the upcoming HBO series.
The Book ‘House Of The Dragon’ Is Based On
Just like ‘Game of Thrones‘, the prequel series is also based on the ‘A Song of Ice and Fire’ series of books by George R. R. Martin.
‘House of the Dragon‘ is specifically based on the portions of Martin’s 2018 novel ‘Fire & Blood’. The story is set around two hundred years before the events of the original. It will chronicle the beginning of the end of House Targaryen.
The events in the series will lead up to Targaryen’s war of succession also known as the “Dance of the Dragons” which resulted in their downfall. The civil war pitted families and sisters against each other.
The storyline takes place in the time after Aegon the Conqueror first united the Seven Kingdoms. It was an era when the Targaryens were at the peak of their power in Westeros. Unlike ‘Game Of Thrones‘ which took place in real-time, the prequel series will span over 30 years.
Cast And Characters Of The Prequel Series
‘House of the Dragon‘ features a number of mostly unknown faces. The story centers on the fifth king of the Seven Kingdoms, Viserys I Targaryen. The role is played by English actor Paddy Considine.
The second most prominent role in the series is of Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen; she is King Viserys’s firstborn child. Emma D’Arcy is portraying the role of the dragon rider. Matt Smith, known for his role in ‘The Crown‘, will be seen as Prince Daemon Targaryen. He is the one entitled to the Iron Throne.
Olivia Cooke also stars in the series as Lady Alicent Hightower who is regarded as one of the most attractive women of Westeros. Seven young actors like Milly Alcock and Emily Carey will be playing younger versions of certain characters.
Welsh actor Rhys Ifans is Ser Otto Hightower, the Hand of the King and serves King Viserys and the entire realm. In the books, Otto and Prince Daemon have a bitter rivalry.
Other prominent characters in the show are Lord Corlys Velaryon (played by Steve Toussaint), Princess Rhaenys Targaryen (Emily Best), and Ser Criston Cole (played by Fabien Frankel).
