Who Was Originally Meant To Be Gossip Girl?

Different TV channels and OTT platforms have brought the best of the best shows for audiences in the last few years. This includes ‘Gossip Girl’, which is a teen drama series that aired from September 19, 2007, to December 17, 2012. The show was also a recipient of several accolades at the Teen Choice Awards.

While the series gained recognition for its characters and storyline, it also led to several adaptations alongside a sequel series of the same name on HBO Max. All those who have watched the show remember that it was narrated by a blogger named Gossip Girl, who played an important role in the progress of the show. But originally the plans were something else.

Blake Lively played the role of Serena van der Woodsen

As mentioned earlier, the entire series was narrated by a blogger known as Gossip Girl. The character was voiced by Kristen Bell who was eventually revealed as Dan Humphrey, portrayed by Peen Badgley. Although it was a major twist in the show, it was slammed by the fans for being very underwhelming.

The show’s original writer, Joshua Safran stated that they planned for someone else to be the Gossip Girl. In an interview with The Daily Beast, Safran said that things would have been better if Nate, portrayed by Chace Crawford, would have been the Gossip Girl.

Why Nate Would Have Been A Better Choice

    Dan, Nate and Chuck

While speaking to The Daily Beast, Joshua Safran said that Nate was finalized as the Gossip Girl until the day he left. He added, “I think we all came to the conclusion that it might be Nate by the end of season four, and then we spent season five teeing it up. If you watch it, there are many clues to it being Nate. But I also think weirdly, in noir fashion, it’s great that we dropped a red herring. But it wasn’t as organic as Dan.”

Safran further explained that Nate would have been a better choice because it was based on the idea that he would feel guilty for sleeping with Serena and that he had to create an alter ego to bring everyone into it. Safran stated that with Dan as Gossip Girl, Badgley’s character was the best option because he wanted to find a way in.
