Few moments in George R. R. Martin’s ‘Fire & Blood’ are more memorable than the end-of-story fight between Daemon and Aemond Targaryen. They had been rivals all along the Dance of the Dragons, and each with a reputation for being a fierce warrior and a skilled dragonrider.

It was not only a battle when they finally met above the God’s Eye, but it was one of the most legendary duels in the history of Westeros. The battle was fierce, dramatic, and left a mystery that has haunted fans for years since the book was published.

Daemon had been waiting 13 days at Harrenhal, challenging Aemond to put an end to his terror on the Riverlands and to meet him in single combat before the battle. On the 14th day, Aemond finally took up the challenge. He rode on Vhagar with Alys Rivers by his side.

With the sun beginning to set, Daemon and Caraxes met Aemond and Vhagar above the God’s Eye. The dragons clashed with great force, their claws and teeth biting into each other, as they struggled to break free from one another. Caraxes had his neck caught by Vhagar as the older dragon tore through Caraxes’ wing and cut into his belly, opening him.

Both dragons were struck down and started to fall towards the lake. Then came the time that made Daemon a legend. He had released himself from Caraxes and, in the middle of the fall, leaped across the open air onto Vhagar and plunged the Valyrian steel sword Dark Sister through Aemond’s remaining eye. It was both a heroic and desperate act.

The dragons plunged into the waters of the God’s Eye, sending a blast of water shooting up higher than the towers of Harrenhal. Vhagar and Caraxes died, and one of the most violent dragon fights in Westerosi history came to an end.

Aemond’s body was found under the lake several years later. Dark Sister was still stuck in his eye socket, giving the chilling proof of Daemon’s final blow. However, Daemon’s body was never found.

Since then, numerous fan theories have emerged about that missing body. Did he somehow survive the impossible fall, or did the lake simply keep its secret forever? George R. R. Martin never provides a definitive answer, leaving one of the Dance of the Dragons’ greatest warriors surrounded by mystery long after the battle ended.
