Shinzaugawa Genya is a supporting character in Kimetsu No Yaiba. He is a part of the demon slayer corps and the younger brother of Sanemi Shinazugawa, part of the Hashiras, who uses the wind-breathing style. Genya was a short boy at his first appearance. He had short buzz-cut hair, his eyebrows were constantly furrowed which gave him an appearance that he was always angry.

Genya had a large and uneven scar over his nose that ran from his cheekbones to his ear. After he became part of the Demon corps, he hit a growth spurt and grew to be almost 6 feet. His hair also grew long enough for him to put them into a Mohawk.

Genya’s first appearance was during the final selection where he was seen yelling at Kanata Ubuyashiki. He was stopped by Tanjiro and they almost got into a fight because of that. Genya was initially very rude and he had a bad temper. He did not have any manners and considered himself to be a lone wolf who accepted help from no one even when he needed it.

However, Genya grew to be more accommodating and cooperative during the battle with an upper moon five demon, Hantengu. In that particular battle, he fought alongside Tanjiro, Mitsuri Kanroji, and Nezuko. After this battle, he had character development and he started being more respectful to others, especially to Tanjiro and his friends.

Shinzaugawa Genya is the brother of Sanemi, the wind Hashira. Both brothers are quite similar to each other and are great fighters. However, Sanemi and Genya do not have a brotherly bond of any sort. Genya knew that his brother was extremely strong and he wanted a connection with his brother, and thus he decided to become a demon slayer.

Is Genya Human? Can He Use Any Breathing Style?

Genya is most definitely a human and a part of the Demon Slayer Corps. It is proved that he is a human as he can easily step foot in the sun and wield a nichirin blade. The reason why fans are confused about Genya’s form is because of an ability he possesses called demonic transformation.

In this ability, Genya can eat a part of any demon and gain demonic traits from it temporarily. If the demon whose flesh he ate is quite strong, Genya can even regenerate his own body. He did that after he ate the upper moon demons and he was even able to intervene in the mind link between Muzan and the upper moons after consuming the hair of Kokushibo.

Genya surprisingly is not the first demon slayer to use this method to gain more power and certainly not the last either. Genya is a part of the demon slayer corps but he however cannot use any breathing style. Gyomei Himejima tried to teach him a breathing style but he was unable to learn it.

In its place, he learned repetitive action, in which Genya repeated certain words or phrases which helped him to focus. He repeats a prayer to concentrate and gain power. In certain ways, he can replicate the effects of total concentration breathing through this technique.
