The Saiyan native Oozaru form was first introduced in the original ‘Dragon Ball’ and was a violent, essentially uncontrollable form that, upon seeing a full moon, turned Saiyans into vicious Great Apes. Goku found out later that he had killed his grandfather when he was a young child while rampaging in this form, which made it all the more terrible for him.
The Great Ape resembles the legend of the ancient werewolf while yet deviating just enough to make it unique among the many other transformations shown in the Dragon Ball series. However, when discussing the giant ape, one could ask how they managed to change into one on their home planet, the planet Vegeta.

Who Are The Saiyans In ‘Dragon Ball’?
Saiyans are a race of otherworldly lifeforms that appear in the ‘Dragon Ball’ anime, manga, and its adaptations. In contrast to the Saiyans from Universe 6, who are guardians, the Saiyans from Universe 7 are shown in the anime as a vicious warrior race that strives to be the strongest in the cosmos. The Saiyans of Universe 7 were all but wiped off by Frieza before the Dragon Ball series began.
Due to their planet’s natural gravity being 10 times greater than Earth’s, Saiyans are inherently stronger than most races. In Universe 7, the Saiyans lived on Salada, but internal turmoil caused their planet’s destruction; in Universe 6, the world is still present. The Saiyans took control of Planet Plant in Universe 7 after defeating the Tuffles there, renaming the planet “Planet Vegeta” in honour of King Vegeta, their most powerful warrior and ruler.
How Did Saiyans Avoid Transforming Into Great Apes On Planet Vegeta?
Most Saiyans have trained their Great Ape forms, at least the more seasoned ones. Once they gain control over it, the change won’t occur just by looking at the moon; rather, they must actively perform it. Similar to how Super Saiyan may be turned on and off as needed after first requiring a surge of wrath to activate it.
Paragus and Beets’ arrival in Vampa is an excellent illustration of this. As an engineer with a Power Level of less than 900, Beets has never transformed into a Great Ape, therefore Paragus cautions him against gazing at the moon. Given his status as a soldier and Colonel in Vegeta’s army, Paragus doesn’t need to be concerned about gazing at the moon, and even if he does transform, he will have better control over it.
