Monkey D. Luffy from ‘One Piece‘ not only smells like trouble but is a tornado of trouble himself. However, who can blame him? He comes from a family that has connections all over the world and is a powerful character. Wherever they go, trouble follows them.
So it’s safe to say, Luffy got this hereditary disease from them. But do we hate Luffy for that? No! In fact, that’s what makes Luffy great. He’s one of the most adorable characters, who is stubborn, full of dreams, loyal to friends, has a heart full of gold, and is a powerful foe if you differ.

Monkey D. Luffy’s Childhood
Since the very first episode, Luffy is portrayed as a carefree character with big dreams. There was no such parental figure, and the boy used to hang around pirates, especially with Shanks (the Red Hair Pirates). It was Shanks who brought the Devil’s fruit to the pub, where Luffy mistakenly ate it and gained the power of Gum Gum Fruit.
Later as the story unfolds, it is shown that his father left him with his grandfather for his own worldly motives. Luffy’s grandfather being in the Marine didn’t allow the man to watch after the kid. He later transfers Luffy and Ace to a pirate queen named Curly Dadan. She was a mother figure to both kids. Luffy’s grandfather Garp raised both him and Ace, whose parents had passed away.
As Luffy goes on his journey and meets new friends and foes, his family background slowly emerges, mostly with his initial ‘D’, often referred to as the ‘Will of D’ in One Piece. He gets connected with powerful figures from all over the world and slowly the mystery around his family name is brought to light. Many characters carry the initial ‘D’. most notable being – Ace, Law, Luffy, Garp, Dragon, and the legendary pirate king Roger.

Luffy And His Sworn Brothers
As mentioned earlier Ace and Luffy are raised together by Dadan. Apart from them, Sabo joins their crew. These three kids often get together and play pirates in the forest, while swearing the oath of being sworn brothers to each other.
While Ace and Luffy become big shots in the pirate world, Sabo joins Luffy’s father and becomes an important member of his team. In a boat crash as a kid, Sabo gets separated from Luffy and Ace. He loses his memory and later Luffy’s father takes him under his wing. He eventually remembers their promise and comes to Luffy’s save every time.
Luffy is the youngest among Ace and Sabo. They both dote on him and come to his ally whenever he needs them. Ace even sacrifices his life to save Luffy, and later Sabo comes forth to protect his younger brother. These three may not be blood-related brothers, but they share a relationship more than that.
Monkey D. Luffy and Monkey D. Dragon
These two have the least interaction in the anime so far. Even though they are father and son, both are more focused on their personal goals rather than playing the family role. Dragon is the most wanted and powerful person in the One Piece world. He is the head of the Revolutionary Army, under whom Sabo works.
Only when Luffy is in danger of getting executed by Buggy – the clown does Dragon show up. He even saves him from Smoker as he considers Smoker to be a threat to Luffy, at least at that moment. Though Luffy doesn’t see him and neither does Dragon bother to reveal himself. Well, that’s a weird family for you.
Gold D. Roger the pirate king, is the father of Ace. Ace and Luffy are sworn brothers, technically raised by Garp – one of the most powerful and top Marine officers. Then we have Dragon, who is the king of Revolutionists and is wanted by the World Government.
That’s a hell of a family. Roger is basically the uncle of Luffy, whereas Dragon would be the uncle to Ace. Except for Garp, the Marines want all of them dead. Garp is a doting yet strict character to his grandsons. Though they are from opposite occupations, their love for their family is no less than another.
