What Is The Relationship Between Luffy And Law In ‘One Piece’?

Law and Luffy’s relationship has been the center of attention often times with questions being raised if both are distant family members, friends, or just competitors.

One Piece‘ characters, Monkey D. Luffy and Trafalgar D. Water Law are polar opposites of each other. Whether it be their personalities or their thinking process. Isn’t there a saying that ‘opposite attracts each other,’ that may be the case between Luffy and Law.

They meet as competitors who are vying for the ultimate treasure “One Piece” but later become friends or accomplices in various deeds. They are shown meeting each other in different situations, quite dangerous ones, in which Luffy tends to have his easygoing attitude irritate the hell out of the serious and calculating Law.

Luffy and Law’s first meeting is quite dramatic. They meet each other at the Human Auctioning House where the former punched the heck out of a Celestial Dragon, much to everyone’s pleasure. Both Law and Kid were present at the auction with several other Top ranked pirates.

Luffy’s action deeply impressed Law. Though their meeting was cut short due to the marine official’s intervention. They met once again after Ace’s death at Marineford where Law treated and saved Luffy’s life. Their next meet fast forwarded to the Punk Hazard Arc where Luffy gleefully greets Law and thanks him for his previous help.

Law was honestly shocked out of his mind at the sight of Luffy but composed himself quite well. Though Smoker ordered him to capture Luffy, he did not hurt him in the slightest but helped him instead. Later he even proposed an alliance to take down Kaido, one of the strongest WarLords.

Within seconds Luffy accepted his offer which shook the Heart Pirates captain. Even a few of his crewmates were not happy with Luffy’s decision and time and again warned him of a possible betrayal. Nothing of that sort happened in the series though. Law helped Luffy and even upheld his name when someone opposed or looked down on the Straw Pirates captain.

But both captains being polar opposites to one other posed a challenge in carrying out their mission. Luffy is a goof happy go lucky character who does whatever he does. This attitude brought out arguments many times with Law who believes in his plans and tends to stick to them.

Luffy is great because he even managed to change Law’s expression several times by annoying and shocking him with his bizarre decisions and putting his life on the line. But nevertheless, both of them carry the legendary letter ‘D’ in their name. Maybe they are some distant cousins, after all, Law does reach out to Luffy whenever the latter is in danger.

Though Luffy considered the alliance as a form of friendship, Law picked it up as a deal. Law does change his ways of thinking later though. So for now, we can conclude by saying they are friends, though Law may be shy to accept this fact as of now. Their bickering characters often bring the viewers joy as they anticipate more of it throughout the series.
